i have a 1ggte running n/a at the moment doing the same thing, is it thowing any codes? mine says the water temp sensor is no good so guna try swaping that and see if it fixes it.
As title states, my car has just started running shit, it splutters, blowing black smoke (my oil seals in turbos are blown that partially because of that), and wont hold idle unless your foot is flat.
Is there anything electrical that would cause this? could it be shit fuel?

62, 63, 64 but I think they we're for a problem I've since resolved. I'll reset it and check again tomorrow morning.
ide go with a vaccuum leak between air flow meter and throttle body...
Check for leaks in every single hose that air passes through, including blowby recirc hoses.
Could be faulty AFM.
Does it idle bad when cold and warm?
nope never idles bad, it just puzzling because yesterday it was running as smooth as, then we swapped a battery and a few other minor things, and now this.
My friend is bringing down a 1uz AFM for me to try today, but if that isnt it i guess ill have to start checking all the hoses.
Are there any hoses that run near the bottom/back of the engine, near the bellhousing? because i just did a manual conversion and may have bumped something.
Alright, update. I left my car overnight and charged my battery up, went out and started her up, it ran but was very very lumpy, sounded like a rotary. I quickly shut it down as it is blowing white smoke, now about an hour later i started it again after some tinkering and it ran for a second before dying, now it wont even fire.
Have I now got a fuel issue also? car will no fire what so ever, it turns over and tries to, but it wont bloody fire!

1uz afm is karman vortex, the 1gg is a flapper style one and wont be compatible.
Have you messed with the timing at all?

im still putting it down to vac leak after the afm...
My celica had the same issues... Got to a point of not starting... Is the intake pipe to the afm stock? If so ide be checing the flexi bits on it

Sorry guys, I think i definitely have an ignition problem. It's only firing on three cylinders, vacuum leak surely couldnt cause that.

I just had a similar problem with mine that's has now been rectified...there is a PVC valve thingy on right side of block near igniter on top manifold there's two hoses under it and plug wiring on top undo the two bolts and take the whole thing off unscrew 3 screws and u will see a metal sleeve and spring clean it with carby cleaner as there would be a type of black sooty carbon build up put all back together and this should rectify it.... if needed send me pm and I will give u my mobile number cheers
