Default AE92 4afc dizzy - swapped engines, resetting base timing?

I have swapped the two 4afc's now, but I have the dizzy from one inserted into the other.

And the timing is out. From what I can gather, it's the base timing, because with the dizzy securing bolts inserted, it's still well out and I can't get it in the right range. (what should the base timing be roughly anyway?)

Is there a way to reset the dizzy to set it up to be in time with the new motor? or are these things reasonably 'set in their ways'?

yeah from memory there are some markings either on the end of the dizzy shaft that you line up with the drive, or on the inside under the cap that you line up. Then rotate the engine to TDC and insert dizzy with markings all lined up.

then use a timing light to set base (static) timing to ~10 degrees BTDC.

My 4AC memory is cloudy, but I am pretty certain thats correct.

I think this answers your questions? ? ?

Thanks man, that's a hell of a start!

Any other info is of course welcomed, but that's a good way to start my investigation

the thing that throws me is the fact that this is a 'lug' setup, not a gear setup, so it's like there's only one way it can go in... I would have thought this made it all ok, but apparently not!!!!!!!

ah right you are then I think.

I would check the position of the Timing Belt.

"Line the crank gear mark up with the oil pump mark, the cam has to be set so the word 4A is upside down (2A at the top) and the little hole above the word 4A lines up on the centre mark (triangle) on the head." - taken from another forum, but I am sure this is how I did it ages ago.

Check the above, if not as above, remove timing belt, line all crap up, re-fit timing belt = win!
