    Default 3SGTE Gen 3 Camry

    Hi guys,

I've been wanting to do a 3SGTE swap into my 5th gen Celica ever since the 5S packed it in. But after a bit of thought, I've come to the conclusion that it's a bit tired since everyone does that and I would rather do something a bit different.

Which brings me to my next point.

My girlfriend has a 94' Camry that she is completely attached to and will never part with. The 5S in it is approaching 300,000kms. Being since these use the same engine as the Celica SX, the gearboxes are interchangeable, the Camry V6 pretty much bolts into the Celica and the 3SGTE uses the same mounts, logic would suggest that it should be a bolt in job (at least physically.)

I've done lots of searching and have found out that it's been done by Wraith and Swegyptian, but I can't seem to find any build threads. Anyone happen to have these bookmarked?

Or better still, does anyone have some first hand advice?

    Thanks in advance guys!

    Jez

    Hi Mate,

    Sounds like an interesting Idea...

I am 95% through a conversion dropping a 3SGE into a 91 SV21 Camry, and one hurdle you will defnitaly find is that the Celica Engine wiring loom will not plug into the Camry body wiring loom. Not a huge problem especially if your good with auto elctronics... or just go aftermarket

You will have to use the v6 flywheel with the GTE to use the stock starter motor, something I found out the hard way... the Manual V6 uses the E153 transmission, so that should no problem to bolt it up and put up with the torque, but I don't know if your drive shafts and hubs would suit...

Have done a bit of a write up if your interested, by the way Horse has droped a Beams 3SG into his Camry SV21 buthas not yet done a write up...

Anyways thats my 5 cents, good luck mate,

    Ryan

the pcd on the v6 FW is different. should be fine to use the 3sgte FW as it was designed for the e153 box and starter.

you may find you need the hubs from the v6, just in case the're similar to the sw20 mr2, all the hub carries are the same except the turbo models have a bigger spline on the driveshaft that goes into the hub.

does the e153 gearbox have that small pipe loop on the outside of the box (will be below/near the clutch mount)? if so, then that's fed by the oil pump inside the box. It might prolonge gearbox life a bit if you change that small pipe loop to the flex+hard piping and external oil cooler featured in the 185/205 gearbox (and I presume the 165)

Well so far from the information that I have, it seems that (in theory) if I have an ST185 or ST205 front cut and the gearbox, clutch, drive axles, hubs and struts from a V6 Camry; I will have everything I need and enough to make hybrid parts if something doesn't mate up properly.

My main issue is wiring, I am very comfortable with sound system wiring, and comfortable with general auto electrics; such as diagnosing and repairing electrical faults, but wiring a whole engine will be a new experience.

Also forgot to mention that this will be my first engine swap.

Thanks so much for all your help guys!!

    Old post for sure
    how did you go?

I still have all my gear ready to go mostly but still wondering about all the v6 gear
Such as using the v6 hubs and complete driveshafts on my 3sgte swap
