Default ? Stripping Chrome Bumper Paint (its got putty! :( ) ?

Decided to strip the paint of the bumpers to have a look see at them being chrome on my car.

Thinking that it was spray paint on original surface i hit the b@stard with paint stripper.

Now its a putty covered bumper The stripper eats the putty but very very very slowly, and im not a man of great patience.

Remebering i want to polish this up ... how can i strip it easily with out scratching?

    thanks all

If you need to use elbow grease then maybe try steel wool, I've used that on chrome before and it doesn't leave scratches (or if it does, they're very fine but could be polished out with a metal polish).

In the past i have use cutting compound and steel wool. It takes a while but the end result is worth it.

As for using acid, don't, it will eat the chrome.

At a last resort, you could look at getting it re dipped.

Your bumpers may have been powder coated or had 2pac paint used on them.

Find a powder coater in your area. They should have a hot caustic bath that they can dip your bumpers in that will take that mess straight off.

I always worry about painted bumper bars. Why were they painted in the first place? A few bumpers that I have seen, have been damaged, straightened with BOG and then painted.
EVERLAST in Sydney do a bumper exchange, drop off your old bumper, pay a wad of cash, ($250.00 ish last time I did it) and take a shiny reconditioned bar home with you. The re-chromed bumpers look fantastic, and the Aussie chrome is a lot thicker than the original Japanese stuff. Looks good for a lot longer.

    cheers Chuck.
