Hi,
I would recommend dropping the engine and transaxle including the front subframe out through the bottom of the car.
Pulling the engine alone out is possible but tricky and you may damage the clutch fingers through lack of room.

I need to change the motor in my ae92 - very quickly...
This will involve ripping the motor out of another car, and putting it into my car all along with removing the motor currently IN my car, within a day.
Possible?
It's the 4afc so there's not a lot of electronics to get in the way, just the carby stuff.
Can the engine be removed without pulling the gearbox out?
What are some of the high level steps? Assume I have all the tools required.

Just rip into it?
It didn't look overly hard in my AE92, shouldnt take more than a few hours to get out.

Well, it would seem now after having pulled a bunch of stuff apart, that my biggest hassle will be the drive shafts - how do I get them out?
+1 to just dropping the whole subframe. Remove the wheels, and using a couple of jacks lower the front of the car until the engine is resting on the ground. Easiest way is to use a wooden board on the ground with a rope attached. Unbolt subframe, jack up car, slide engine out.
As for driveshafts, you can either unbolt them from the hubs, or use a crowbar to lever them out from the gearbox (drain oil first). I was replacing them anyway so just yanked the CVs out of the tripods.

leave them in the auto and hubs. remove the two bolts connecting hubs to struts.
undo the calipers and hang with wire.
that way you won't lose auto fluid.
don't forget to disconnect speedo cable from the trans.
also disconncet tie rod ends.

Remove engine mounts, Gbox+engine out the top, quickest way, i tried out the bottom but its completely fucked doing it that way.
So are you saying there Casey that I should remove the engine+gearbox with the driveshafts still in place?
How hard is it to pry the driveshafts out of the gearbox?
I don't need the gearbox from the donor - I'm going to pick a part for this donor motor.
So the easiest way to get it all out is the way that I need - there will be no power tools nor jacks.
There is however an engine crane.
Engine crane is all you need if you lift out the top. I did my last two swaps in a shoebox sized shed and out the top was definitely the easier option solo. (with Gbox and motor mated)
rip the gearbox off when its out, much quicker/less awkward.
So your saying Casey that I should pull the engine+gearbox+driveshafts out all as one?
Otherwise, can i just pry the drive shafts our with a big screw driver? Haynes said something about aligning them, but I'm not sure that's necessary?
I'm getting th donor engine from pick a part, and I don't need the gearbox - so that can be knackered fro all I care. But I do want the motor in good nick.
That said, my car here has to be pulled out in OK nick because the gearbox will be used again of course. So I'm thinking that prying the drive shafts out the gearbox is the way to go with that. Which bit do I leverage off of?
remove shafts >then remove engine mated to box
Yeah remove them when its in the car
Remove shafts from hubs > then pull out of gearbox > then remove engine mounts (& all lines n wires ect...) then yank the **** out the top (make sure bonnet is removed, i know it sound stupid but i've seen it attempted).
