    Default aftermarket ignition coils?

    Hey guys,

just wondering about running aftermarket ignition coils with a stock ecu. What I want to know is if I can run them with the stock ecu? I have a jzz30 soarer that is soon to be sporting a reasonably worked 1.5J and I think that one (maybe 2?) of my current coils could be on the way out. I'm not really interested in running 2nd hand coils and also not interested in paying what toyota want for new ones either.

If I can get away with using them on the stock ecu (with an ignition amplifier? I was just planning on using an emanage blue for now) that would be great, other than that I think I might have to fast track my new ecu. Cheers.

Oh, also forgot to mention that the other reason that I'd like to go aftermarker coils is that I would prefer to keep them out of the valley of the head as I'm sure that I will soon experience heat related issues with them there (seen it to many times before).

I run Bosch HEC-715 coils on my firewall cause the 1JZ factory ones cracked, but i've got aftermarket engine management. Can you find out what dwell time the factory ECU is set to for comparison?

I'll see what I can dig up, cheers.

Any ideas if the emanage blue would run them? You can get an ignition harness with it so would assume that it must have some sort of power of the coils? Soz for all the q's, the soarer is a tad out of my league, not used to all the bells and whistles in it, I'm more old school in terms of mechanical knowledge, but I'm getting there!

Stock Toyota coils are very good, lots of big-power setups use them. However if you want to go aftermarket to save a buck there's no reason you can't. Apparently MSD make pretty good high-power coils, not sure if they're any cheaper though?

I was leaning more towards the microtech variety. Main reason I wanted to change them was that I was under the impression that they had a tendancy to fail under high temperature conditions. Now I am hearing more and more that they have been used successfully in high powered applications I think I might stick with them.

They have been known to crack with age - remember they're up to 16 years old now - but that's the same with any ignition coil really. I've never heard of any temperature-related failures, but of course anything will fail if you get it hot enough!
