I know thermos have been dicussed in depth, inc wiring. What I'm wondering is why should I bother with a switch? Why can't I just have them run all the time? I think I would prefer to know they run all the time...

Hi,
The clutch fan (I assume you mean viscous coupled) comes on when hot and backs off when not, so it is not on all the time.
Having it on all the time just means that you increase wear on the electric fan, plus all the time it is operating it pulls power from your battery, which means your alternator is going to have to deliver more energy to keep the battery charged, which means more load on your engine to keep the alternator charging at a higher level.
Nothing technically wrong with it, but sort of wasteful on energy.
Why don't you leave your headlights on all the time too?

Just looking for a cheap temporary solution till I get some money to do it properly...

Maybe I can wire them up too my head lights and when the car starts overheating I'll just flick the lights on...
Or just spend the $50 on a proper switch???
Running them all the time will use more fuel and sap power (ignoring all the other reasons why not to do it).

or wire them to your neutral switch.. when the car overheats, put your gear into neutral and have a beer somewhere. i hope you're kidding
wiring to head lights is only 0.01% easier than proper manual switch. of course the best way is to use the thermoswitch.
but as for hardwiring the fan, i don't see any harm as far as electrical load goes. if you see the charge light comes on often then you know your alternator is not up to the job.
the only downside i see is you'll wear out the carbon brush on the fan motor much quicker and longer time to reach operating temps upon cold starts. correct me if incorrect?

yes fuel consumption should suffer also from hardwiring but how significant is it as long as it's just a temporary solution?

I think I'll wire it direct to battery with some clips to I can just disconnect when I get out. Will only be like that for a couple of weeks

Hi,
Just put a switch in the cabin to turn the fan on and off manually as required, but you'll need to keep an eye on the temp gauge so you dont cook your engine.
It's a crude extemporisation, but workable for the short term.

agreed with the switch TEMPORARILY but in saying that if you dont run a relay anyway and you leave the fans on for too long youll burn out the switch either way you look at it if its not done properly its only gone last a short period of time as for dodgy things they defanitely are temporary you know like to just get home or to get to 1 place wouldnt recomend it if your driving it a fair bit plus you robably could buy everytyhing for round $50 you just got to go the right place
Switch doesn't work for me - i always forget. Previous owner did mine that way, and it was a pain in the ass - i just left on all the time instead to save forgetting. Now i've reqired it properly its great to know i don't have to think about it. If you are going to do it dodgy, at least use a relay so that it only comes on with ignition?
If you want to be tight the get secondhand themo switch and relays from a wreckers? Cable costs SFA.
