ecu on top of the centre tunnel. you need to remove the centre console panels and you'll see it.
to remove loom easily? remove all the trim

pita but if your doing a swap from one car to the other it'll be easier for you to do that anyway.

if you're doing nothing else other than the swap (eg time off work/weekend flat out) then a few days.

Just take it slowly and if need be photograph something before you take it apart. worse case scenario ask here

ok im pretty tyred long night no sleep so if i dont make full sence .. sorry ...
im runnin a sv21 manual 3sf - i have next to me a sv21 auto 3sfe .. is there a difference between the manual and auto loom???? coz i need to use the new efi loom will it plug up too my manual trans what iz involved .. need help before i go back out in the hot ...
also just to clarrafy i thort it was standard practice to remove both drive shafts before removing the engine .. then a mate rolled up and said i was wasting time just lift it out and they will drop .. to my understanding.. (i have been a rwd man for ever) you have to pull them strait out with impact.... lifting them would just destroy the couplings yea?? but the loom is the important bit???

Yes, remove drive shafts first before removing the engine... but drain oil from the gearbox first or you'll have a big mess.

As with removing the engine, it's easier to lower the engine down onto a trolley or something, then lift the chassis up and roll the engine out.

Don't put weight on the wheels unless you have CV joints in the hubs, you will most likely destroy the wheel bearings otherwise.

The auto loom will be slightly different, you will need to bridge the neutral start switch at a minimum. The ECU probably has a lower rev limit as well.

For auto to manual, you'll need to trace the wire from the starter circuit off the ignition barrel.
It'll go from here either to the auto shifter, or to where the shifter cable fits to the gearbox (sorry, I don't know Camry's and every manufacturer is different, but there's only 2 locations for the neutral safety switch).
Then there'll be another wire from here to the starter motor.
You need to bridge those 2 wires because the manual doesn't need it (they normally run a wire straight from the ignition barrel to the starter motor).

Also, you need to find where the reverse lights gets activated. Again it'll be either where the shift lever is or on the gearbox on the auto.
The manual will have a reverse switch on the gearbox (normally its on top).
You'll need to lengthen the 2 wires from the auto loom to reach the manual's gearbox switch.

Apart from that, just swap absolutely everything else over including fuel lines (often bigger in EFI cars, especially older models), fuel tank (will have internal swirl pot so you don't starve the EFI fule pump) and fuel pump (are these inside the tank?)

As for removing the driveshafts, you can lift the engine/box out with them in, but as you start to lift, you need to "break" them loose of the gearbox (so they unclip), and while you slowly lift keep pulling them out of the box. However, it would be easier to remove them as lining them back up when reinstalling the box is a PITA.

Out of curiousity, why do you need to remove the box anyway. With a bit of jiggling, twisting, etc, you should be able to remove the engine from the box & lift it out the top, leaving the gearbox in the engine bay (you'll still have to remove all of the mounts however, so whatever is easier).

Good luck with it. It did a turbo, efi, auto, sedan halfcut into a carbied, manual, Subaru wagon many moons ago. That was a bitch 3 months of stripping wires out of looms and swapping them over...

Auto Neutral start switch sits on the side towards the front of the car. Trace the auto shifter cable if you can't find it immediately. From the switch there is a plug at the top, this is all the wiring for the NSS. This includes reverse lights, and the wires you need to bridge for starting. I'll try to find you the wiring diagram so PM me your email and i'll send it through when i find it.

Manual box has the reverse lights at the top just in front of the shifter linkages.

wagonist, maybe you haven't worked on camry's but i can assure you its a pain to leave the box bolted to remove the engine. There is next to no lateral movement so that you can easily separate the engine from the box. Dale put it correct, drain box, rip out shafts, unbolt mounts and wiring, undo cooling hoses, power steering hoses, drop engine, lift car.

When taking off the auto, remember to undo the bolts for the flex plate before you try and slide the box off.

    All the best dude
