    Default MX83 Lowering Options

So I want to lower my Cressida, but can’t find anywhere that does lowered springs that will give it a decent drop. I have been to repco and pedders and they both¬ said that only king springs make them and it only gives you a 3cm drop.

I have tried searching this forum but can’t find anything about the mk3 supra strut conversion either. I have heard that you can do this for the rear for more travel at a lower height but is there any thing that you can do for the front?

I would be greatful for any advice

weve just had a thread on this a few weeks ago, try the sear buton...

kings are the only ones made for the 83, YOU CAN HAVE THEM SENT BACK AND RE-SET LOWER.

if you plan to lower the rear of the cressy 2"...be prepared for it to be riding on the strut bump stops,

(amichie) has done a good write up on the cressida forum about how to use a SHORT stroke from the MA70 supras (for the rears)

Thanks Blake. Might as well post here also.

I was seriously dissappointed in the KYB replacement shocks for the rear of my mx83. I decided to test out the rumour that Supra MA70 rear struts can be used.

First attempt I found the rear spring seat on the supra strut was way too big for the mx83 spring. After putting the car back together I realised the spring seats come off with two or three taps with a hammer.

So I spent a couple of hours this morning trying again and this time with success.

I gotta tell you they are 1000000000 times better than the cressida ones.

No more bottoming when you come down after a speed bump. That used to drive me mad about the stock kybs since the original toyota ones never did it.

Anyone wanting to try then this is the part number for the supra struts

    KYB GR2s prt no. 341-070.

The following may only apply to KYB shocks. No promises about other brands.

The picture shows the cressida strut on the left and the supra one on the right. The supra one is shorter since the strut has about 20mm less travel. It doesn't affect the ride height just the preload on the spring. Its actually better for running lowered springs etc.

Here is how you change the spring seat from the big supra one to the smaller cressida one.

There is also a slight difference in the shaft ends.

Anybody in Aus/Sydney who wants the spring seat swap done I would be happy to do it for a 6 pack.

that gets me thinking now Andrew,

you used KYB stockos then swapped to the KYB supras,

im now thinking that the TOYOTA stock rear spring seats wont tap off...wont be interchangeble with the KYB's....

i'll have to check that out next time ive got the cressy on a hoist,

I'm 99.9% certain that the stock toyota ones are the same and are actually made by kyb.

Just have a little look anyway.

I did the swap last week using the Supra struts and MX83 lowered springs.
    All worked easily.
And yes KYB did make the original MX8s shocks.
My old ones had Toyota/KYB stamped over them

Rear spring seats tap of very easily with a rubber mallet.
I should update my thread in the next few days with how i did it.

Well worth it, except i scrape my driveway now when I enter/leave the car park

amichie: So you use the oem supra shocks with the cressida bump stop and spring. Do you use the cressida top or the supra one as they have a diferent pcd. Also, is there anything that you can do to the front struts or is it only the rear that is a problem?

I used the cressida top mount on the rear. It required a 2 minute adjustment with a round file to make the strut fit inside the cressida top mount.

I have also fitted KYB RAV4 inserts in the front. Again they are about 20mm shorter stroke and about 50% stiffer. Just about perfect really. Again the strut insert requires a spacer to be fitted under the strut base to fit inside the mx83 strut. The top mount is identical and the the cressida top mount can be used without any issues.

These struts will work extremely well with low king springs, but I found th single biggest improvement was when I upgraded the rear sway bar to a 18mm kmac bar. I also have a 27mm front bar that was not worth the effort.

I was thinking about Lovells or Dobinsons but I cant find any info on them. What I might do is just get the king springs that I have had on order from repco for about a month and if there not low enough, send them back to be re set

There are so many options for springs.

    1. Kings, kmac, lovells, dobinsons, aurora, jumboz and more I'm sure.

Dobinsons fronts are very soft. Dobinsons rears are exactly the same specs as kings.

Lovells dont' make lowered springs for mx83 unless you special order.

Kings are a good compromise between height, price and performance.

If you just combine the king lows with the KYBs mentioned above you should be happy with the handling.

    So far they are great.
Car rides much harder over bumps, and around my area, its very easily noticed.
However feels more solid around the bends, abit less roll...

Night/Day when compared to my old kit.. but they were fairly rooted

I'd go the supra struts over the mx83's. They are slightly more expensive though...
