    Default A Clutch disc question

    Hey guys,

I'm after some advice on a clutch disc. I have too extremes here in the following pictures:

On the left, is a stock replacement clutch disc. On the right, is an Exedy sprung 5 puck BB.

I'm wondering, what's in between the two? Something that gives similar "grab" to the BB, but is to a point, slippable like the stock one.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    Kind Regards,
    Kurt.

exedy make a cushioned button ceramic.

similar to the ceramic on you have pictured except with more buttons (softer take up) and the cushioning plate between the elements.

my flatmate has one in his gtz and its pretty easy to use. much easier to use then the 4 button ceramic uncushioined (like you have pictured)

edit: keeping in mind none of the ceramic units like to be slipped.. it kinda shortens their lifespan fairly considerably.

but if you are just using it in traffic you dont need to slip it that much if you are careful/sensible/competent

the exedy's are not to bad as they have a sprung centre! i never found it a problem doing 3 hours a day in traffic. just leave a little gap so you dont slip it, makes them last a lot longer.
if you teach yourself how to let it out properly you want need to slip it often, but they do slip a bit if needed. even the triple plate ones in a race car with slicks i can get to slip when needed.
    you get used to them
or get a full face peromance clutch with a higher clamping load.

    Thanks for the prompt replies!

I find the stock one i have in the car now, a little to soft, and the BB one pictured that i had, was a little too harsh, in that, taking off from any rpm lower than 1500 would rattle the exhaust and shake the engine!...not sure if that was to do with bad engine mounts or just too grabbier clutch. I wouldnt of thought is was that bad, considering it is sprung!
    Kind Regards,
    Kurt.

naa that sounds about right the the ceramic unit i put one in the ex's aw11 (4 paddle sprung centre ceramic) and if you slipped it it would shudder and be quite simply awful. but once you knew how to drive it properly it was tops. a little tiring in traffic but not really that bad.. and fantastic out in the twisties.... but what two isnt.

yes they will shudder a bit if you do to slow a takeup, as the springs only takeup a small part of enicial takeup as there only small. get a full face with a bit more clamp. prob what your after!

your all mad using a BB plate for an everyday driver

if you do a lot of driving you really want it to be a pleasurable experience and soon get sick of: "you can drive it ok once you get used to it" ..... why??

if its predominantly a race car or drift car and still registered then you could consider a brass button clutch as a good compromise at the best

but if its a dayly driver then get a heavy duty organic unit with good clamping load it wont slip ... will last for years.... wont shudder and jerk.... it wont rip your flywheel to shreds .... and will be lovely and smooth everytime you take off !

hey thats my new clutch ! apprently are very good and soften the pressure put onto your gearbox, id say somethin organic might be an in between not sure really, maybe there isnt really a go between apart from the above IE cushion heavy duty

Yeah i understand what you mean. I had tried that 5 puck one i pictured above. I don't mind the harsh engagment at all. I enjoyed that part of it...however, the shudder and knocking from engine movment/exhaust, i didn't enjoy !
Perhaps as you and other have said, a nice organic high clamping pressure clutch would be the go. It would have an nice solid engagment, but not that excessive engine movement!!
    Kind Regards,
    Kurt.

Yea mate as u know i'm currently in the same situation

My new car has a 3sgte, Lightened flywheel and a 3 puk Brass button (uncushioned i believe), My problem is working out what to do hahaha..

I'm gettin it in less than a week, It will be a daily driven car so i'm in the same boat, i didn't mind the shaking when u had the car jetspeed, it wasn't all that bad but unless it was below 2000-2500 it would slip

My worry is in regards to the lightened flywheel!

I've got a similar problem, lighten flywheel with a 3 puk ceramic clutch.
You just need to rev it abit more as the lighten fly is stopped easily especially with the extra clamping force.

Note the brass button ones hate being eased in slowly and usually stall.
So long as you got a proper lightend flywheel it should hold up with no probs.
