Probably easiest to put a 1JZ into a Hilux which came with EFI
Always wanted to do this conversion! im about to start looking for a hilux but need to know what model lux i should be looking for to make the conversion abit more easier but has to still remain 4wd. i know no conversion is straight foward as i have already done a few! any info from u guys that have done the conversion would be great!
considering 1jz or 1uz as i can get my hands on either.

ide investigate the legalities of this as well... as i have heard a rumor of them not allowing turbo engine conversions etc to commecial vehicles...
havent seen it confirmed at all though
it might just be in qld also... As i said though just a rumor but ide check before going ahead with it.
It might be under a rule change and was previously ok
I would personally put a 1uz in a Hilux 4x4 over a 1jz. It's personal preference but the power curve for the 1uz is much better for a 4b, the 1jz is less driveable in off road conditions. 1jz is heaps more fun though if you are just chasing HP.
Cost wise I think the cost would be cheaper for the 1uz. The bellhousing and clutch etc is more expensive for the 1uz but everything else will be cheaper. Anything Turbo costs more unless you leave everything on the motor standard which is rare to see on any conversion.
As for legality at this stage Qld rules will allow either motor 1j/2j/1uz in a Hilux at this time.
That's just my opinion though, others might dissagree with me.
Good luck with the decision
Aaron.
of you do the 1uz route leave it auto in a 4wd or it will eat gearboxs unless you drive like miss daisy. the last one a mate had lasted 400kms highway use only (driving it home to canberra from toowoomba) and tore every tooth off the input shaft of a w series box. its a long way to drag it home!!!! but in a 2wd they are a lot of fun manual

If you do go with a 1uz-fe i would reccomend getting a Soarer engine/trans as they run a single ECU for both, others run a seperate computer for the trans which is more shit to hide under the dash, The rubber donut coupling on the rear of the trans can be easily removed and replaced with a hilux 4 bolt flange, When i did mine (2wd auto) i got the 1.5 shift kit from MVautos, its well worth the money and makes it so much more livelier to drive. I also got the 2800rpm stall which would be fine if i carried out the cams swap that was planned, never got arnd to that so its a bit loose for everyday driving but still fun, 1UZ's sound much better than 1JZs even with the restrictive Crown log manifolds. Just my 2cents.
ls400 also have a single computer just te old crown that has 2 ecus - ls400 have a front sump - soarer have a rear sump. i like the front sump setup.

Jump on to Lextreme and contact a guy called 'gloverman'.
He runs a shop in NZ that specialises in 1UZ Hilux conversions.
He can sell you mounts, sumps, etc etc to make it all a bolt in conversion.

Be careful about engine mounts, i bought $300 mounts from Gloverman and they didn't go anywhere near fitting, they seemed to be made well, he is definetly NOT dodgy i have seen his work on Lextreme but his hilux mounts were all wrong, being in NZ you will still have to pay freight return which i think was about $50 oneway, I also bought CRS mounts and they too were all wrong i spent about $600 on mounts that did not fit and in the end made up my own, I won't bag out Gloverman as i think he's a top bloke but CRS is another storey, those pricks have no idea and will give you the run around and tell you the bloke that designed these mounts has left the company now- they are ripoff merchants. You can get some really good ideas on here for how to make the adaptor mounts out of cardboard first and then bolt them to the orig rubber isolator mounts, if you do make your own allow about 7mm for engine to sag overtime, i didn't take this advice and my engine sits lower now then i would like, Genuine Toyota isolator mounts worked out the same price as the aftermarket ones too- well worth getting.
