Default 1jz coils and igniter with autronic sm4??

Im about to start wiring up my autronic sm4 onto my 1jz/2jz and am unsure if its possible to use the standard coils without using bosch igniters. It works out cheaper to buy msd coils than use bosch igniters with standard coil packs.

My question is, is it possible to use a standard 1jz igniter module and then use the standard coil packs aswelll all with the autronic sm4?
Im guessing it must be possible, but i would need the wiring diagram for the standard igniter module.
    Does this sound right?
Can anyone give any advice or suggestions?

    Cheers

Im assuming that the SM4 has at least 6 seperate ignition outputs.
I have setup my Link (Vipec) with the factory ignitior and coils.

The factory wiring runs waste spark as the factory ECU must only have three ignition drivers. I picked through the harness and found the six wires that go to the ignitor and seperated them. I then wired them to the ignition outputs of the Link. The other side of the coil wiring should be +12v with ignition on to provide the power.

The SM4 will only trigger the negative side of the ignitor.

Hmm the spec sheet for SM4 I found showed only 4 ignition outputs.

So that limits you to wasted spark on a 6cyl engine, and the problem with that is that the factory 1JZ-GTE non VVTi igniter can't be used in wasted spark (so I've been told by trusted sources).

    This thread is relevant:

I think you're a bit confused there. Factory 1JZ-GTE Non-VVTi are sequential spark, hence the 6 wires in the loom going to the igniter! If it was wasted spark one would expect 3 wired going from the engine ECU to the igniter!

1JZ-GTE VVTi are wasted spark however.

Pinout for xJZ-GTE Non VVTi igniter for reference.

Yeah my bad. What I meant is that the factory ecu must only run three drivers as the ignitor wires are grouped in pairs in the loom from the ecu to the ignitor.

So he should be able to run the three grouped trigger wires off the three ignition outputs?

Cheers guys, i also realised the standard jz ignitor has 6 input outputs. I then considered doing what mr1jz said and pairing up into 3 channels but im thinking this is going to cause problems either with overheating ignitor or who knows what else.
General assumption now is that the SM4 only having 4 outputs is not going to be appropriate using the standard jz ignitor....either i use the 3 channel bosch ignitor i have and buy 3 dual fire msd coils to go with it, or i buy 3 bosch ignitors and use the set of standard jz coil packs.... either way im looking at approx ~$250 - $300 to spend.
Any one else agree or disagree?

Would it be possible to use the Hilux Surf/4runner 5vz ignitor with the JZ coil packs? They run a waste spark setup with 3 in/out.

And what I'm saying is that you're wrong

Factory 1JZGTE (Non VVTi) enging ECU has 6 ignition drivers (One for each cylinder) going to the igniter

This is clearly shown on the wiring diagrams, engine ECU pinouts etc for xJZ-GTE non VVTi

What I've heard is that running the stock non vvti xJZ-GTE igniter in wasted spark as ...

i.e. Pairing the engine ECU ign output to the igniter inputs as:
    SM4 = xJZ-GTE Ingiter input
    SM4 IG1 = 1&6
    SM4 IG2 = 5&2
    SM4 IG3 = 6&4

Doesn't work well (as referenced in the thread I linked to), my understanding is that the igniter has enough smarts inside it to know that two channels should not be triggered at the same time and cracks the sads / plays up

I'd be hesitant to run two coils off one of the factory igniter outputs, as you say there are lots of better options, such as

-buying a proper 6 channel 'dumb' igniter (i.e. Microtech X6) and pairing the ECU outputs to igniter inputs as I've listed above

-buying/using a proper 3 channel wasted spark igniter (can the existing 3 channel bosch igniter you have drive two coils?) if so you could just rewire the factory coils so that two coils come off each igniter channel

-converting to 1NZ style COP which have inbuilt igniters (what I've did) and have each of the engine ECU ignition outputs wired to trigger two coils.

I run a Autronic sm4 on my 1JZ with stock coil packs and igniter, it runs fine, so defiantly possible. I originally asked my tuner about putting LS1 coil packs on but he said J motor coil packs are fine and its probably best just to get some brand new stock ones and if you really are running out of spark get a HKS-DLI.

Cheers wilbo, unsure about the bosch igniter and pairing up coils, but i cant see why that wouldnt work unless the load was too high somehow.

Axerus, do you know how your igniter is wired up? or able to find out? clearly if yours is running fine i will try it first to see if i also get the desired results before spending more money.

No none of the stock loom is used, I used the autronic loom & rewired the whole engine.
From memory the coils have 4 wires each, 2 earths, 1 12v supply & 1 signal from the ecu. They have inbuilt ignitors so no external ignitor is needed, I just wired the autronic ignition outputs straight to the coils.
I got that from Bigworm in regards to installing LS1 Coils using SM4 and 1JZ

    hope that is some help
