most likely there is a short in the sensor wiring to ground!
Hey guys, first thread asking for help so excuse the sheepishness on account of it being a self-inflicted problem..
Firstly, I replaced the dashboard in my car. all of it, but kept the same gauge cluster. Upon replacing it, I realised that as soon as I hooked it up again, the fuel gauge read as high as it could, despite the car being empty of fuel.
Any ideas or opinions anyone wants to offer? Feel free, I've pulled it in and out a few times tryign to fix it, but I'd like to work it out asap as I am migrating to nsw in five days :|

p.s. Similar problem with the temperature gauge, it just reads to the max.. Feel rather silly

Somethign along the lines of what I'm thinking.. Maybe when pulling the dash out it has cut into a wire and is shorting it now or something? Looks like I've got some solid detective work ahead of me..
Is it appropriate that both the fuel AND temperature would be reading high? The fuel sits up there but the temp re-zeroes and maxes out gradually as the car is turned off and on respectively. Giving me a few headaches! Thanks for the suggestion mate
had the dashboard out - did you use the same dash harness or replace it as well? if the problem wasn't there before and still the same harness you squashed the wires under a bolt/clip/ stuck a screw through it. if you have replaced the harness its still the most likely but break out the multimeter as well to check it

assembly is just the opposite of disassembly - just you swear in different spots!
Left the dash harness..
Pulled the cluster and ancillaries out again today, followed the bundle of wires back, all untouched by anything through the firewall and back towards the fuel tank. Pulled all the gauges individually and checked them. Even chased up the temperature sender in the engine and nothing has come loose..
Ratehr confused so ithink it's time to send it to the auto electrician

I would say that you have damaged the sensor earth. Get the diagram for the cluster and Chase the sensor ground wire back with a multimeter to find the loss of continuity.
