    Default 2ZZ Clutch job

Probably not an appropriate question for this forum, but I've grown a great deal of trust with this group unlike a states Toyota forum I also belong to. So here goes: I'm about to do a clutch job on my wife's 06 Matrix XRS. In getting parts I was surprised to learn they did away with the pilot bearing. I've mostly worked with older engines over the years and they all had a bronze oiled insert or ball bearing. So for this car just use a high temp grease such as wheel bearing grease for disc brakes on the end of the 1st motion shaft / crank interface? Any other tips for doing this job? It looks pretty straight forward so I don't anticipate anything, but experience is the best tool in the box so I thought I'd tap into the "best source of great tools", Ha Ha!!!!

    Thanks All,

Sounds normal, I've never seen a FWD transaxle use a pilot bearing in the crank. Generally the input shaft won't even extend far enough forward to reach a pilot bearing nor have the end machine to mate with one.

Not 100% sure on the reason but I believe it's because the input shafts are shorter so less prone to vibration/oscillation and there is extra bearings on the transaxle side of the input shaft.

    Dale,

Thank you for the info. This is my 1st time doing a sideways engine, so as you can tell all of my previous work is more vintage. If they are beafing up the 1st motion shaft berings I can understand why the tip no longer extends into the rear of the crank. Thanks again!

Reason for it is that in a RWD engine,
the input shaft in the gearbox only goes in a short way,
and there is only one bearing supporting it, so it needs another at the engine end to support the shaft.

FWD gearboxes have the input shaft most of the way through an it has two bearings supporting it, so another in the crankshaft is not needed.
