maybe he just has it in for you coolwagon
While this thread is recovered I will post up my results.
Against alot of the advise in this thread I did leave the engine in the car with the crank in and rehone the bores. I turned the crank to the side, wrapped it in a rag and taped it over. very difficult to do with the limited space. then ran the honer up and down a few times slow speed quickly up and down to roughen them up again. looking at the rings there was stuff all wear on the outside of them, only the top one had a little bit of scraping on it. So i reused them and hoped I wouldn't regret it. for some reason the splits in the oil rings had all moved to the exact same point. I guess this wasn't helping the issue originally. I certainly didn't put them in like that, by the rings instructions it said make them an inch appart each way, thats what I did. But this time I did as per BGB which is opposite corners.
As per the the kick ass website I ran it hard. really loaded up lots of WOT and big overrun down the hills. changed oil at 250km, 1000km, 25000km, then ran my normal light semi synth oil at 5000km.
Car now has 6000kms since doing this and over the past 1000km its used almost no oil. It only gone down about 1mm on the dipstick.
