    Default 12R engine/box & upgrades

    Hi guys

    12R 1.6lt with column-shift manual gearbox. Supposedly 90hp but I'm not convinced

Is it worth a quick freshen up, or just throw it in the bin? Is there a relatively cheap/easy upgrade... eg. a basic early 18R?

Are you able to retain the column shift... maybe using a van gearbox or something? Or does the existing 12R box bolt up to later R motors (I remember something funny about gearboxes, flywheels and sumps being different)?

    Any info greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

I'd freshen up the 12R. What would you replace it with... an 18R-C?

Pooo to that idea as you'll get probably less power from a heavier and more thirsty engine.

Furthermore, any 18R-C is going to be pretty old and clapped out a little, so it's going to need rework also.

been throwing around ideas. it is already only a 1.6 so putting a 4ag(t)e in it isn't as crazy as it sounds.

I was looking into possibilities for replacing the ol' 2R engine (1900CC, column shift too) with something a little more modern.. I was also told that gearboxes are different pattern, and that they prob wouldn't like the added torque anyway.

I decided to keep the ol 2R untill it dies, then maybe change to a 3S series engine.

Yeah i'm thinking i might just give it a very basic freshen-up, and a solid pretty-up... and see if I can kill it. It's been running for 41 years now....

i have one in my ute....with the webber i can get up to 125 kph ! ,but its been to sydney and back
the bell housing seems to be part of the engine ,there is a huge shroud on the back of the motor making swaps a bit hard if you want to keep the box and column shift .
best thing i did was spend some time rebushing the shift linkages with hard plastic tube taking all the slop out
18 rg and 5 speed coming up next time i get a week off
Remember this is a recreational activity ......

we got toys ! 83 lo lux in matte black..... amazingly 18 rg powered , one day it will run right !
