Hey everyone. What have I gotta buy to make this fit. I've got a ta22 and freshly rebuilt 18rg and w50 sitting here
Looking for a new toy. If you have something 18r powered let me know.

just skimmed over some of those posts and saw most of the info pointed to the RA21 X-member as being the way to do it. I once owned a TA22 with an 18R-GE in it. Was bolted to a standard ta22 x member. Not sure what the sump was off maybe hilux? Also when I compared where the mounts were bolted to a few 18r blocks I had lying around they were different! Some 18R blocks had bosses for the engine mounts to bolt to the front and some didn't. If you've got the bosses to mount the mounts at the front it looks like it could almost be a bolt in. Maybe the latter 18R-GE's had them? Maybe all later R blocks? No idea... I remember that car was running a W55 box with a custom tailshaft, and TA22 auto 4 bolt trans x member. Still have the tailshaft I think. Anyone hope this helps.
I have done it once before many moons ago.
Sump not sure what I used maybe a corona front sump but never had a problem once fitted. I used a ta22 crossmember, and I modified the engine mount brackets (the ones that bolt to the engine. Basically the mounting point is ~100mm forward of the cross member mounts so I welded 6mm steel flat onto the current mounts with some bracing.
Gearbox I used a w50 with an auto crossmember and auto tail shaft that seem to all bolt in.
So fairly basic really just the RG mounts are forward of where the T series mounts are. Engine sit a bit further forward when compared to a t series.
Roger
What Roger has described seems to be the the way I have seen it done also. The auto used in the TA22 had the same mounting and tailshaft requirements as the W50, so theres your easiest starting point. I would suggest locating the engine to suit the gearbox mount. W55 would move the engine forward approx. 100mm due to the different mounting location.
Hiace may be another source of front sump. Don't forget the oil pickup too.

iv done one,
*i used a cast iron 5 speed w series gearbox with a auto T series crossmember .it bolted onto standard mounting holes and i used a ta22 auto tail shaft
*engine x-member re-mounted approx100mm forward but better off dummy fitting because front of engine is close to radiator , you wont be able to use a belt driven fan
If you are using a standard TA22 crossmember then the later model 18RGEU engine is your best bet, correct sump and pickup with a more rearward set of engine mount bosses on the block. This is what was used for the conversion in my KE70 which is very similar to the TA22 engine bay layout.

I've got an 18rgeu block and an automatic celica for parts so this conversion is looking pretty easy right now, provided I can source a chain guide. I've got a fully rebuilt motor but I'm missing the curved guide so I can't put it together

Good luck with that, hope you aren't trying to find a new one...

At the moment anything that isn't dust would be an improvement

I was about to ask where you had sourced a chain guide. Thinking about getting one custom made..
Street: RA23 with 18RG (off the road being rebuilt, rust cut out, etc, usual story)
Track/Rally: TA23 with 18RG Cams Logbooked (my baby)
The amazing thing about common sense is it's not that common...
