There is a dedicated Soarer thread in General Car Talk lots of the guys there will be able to help most convert to manual as soon as they can perhaps this might be a better option for you.
Hi guys,
Im waldo, new to the forums as a poster but a reader for a while. I have been converted to Toyota and will be purchasing a 1JZ driven Soarer next week.
My back is in Nissans and manual transmissions so when it comes to the auto Soarer Im a little lost as to what to do. I have read many posts on the Soarer Central forum but this has confused me more. I have some experience tuning Wolf ECUs using just a simple Innovate LM1 wideband. I am by no means an expert and have much to learn.
On this forum I can see that some are using autos with teh 1JZ and running stand alone ECUs, my question is how is this done?
(Does the stock ECU run the auto and then the stand alone ECU run fuel and Ign? If so, does the stock ECU still require feedback in terms of fuel and ign?)
Basically I already have a GT35r, Eboost, intercooler and Link ECU for the car and would like to use these.
Another question relates to the auto.
What must one do in order to handle more power?
Ive seen people run certain lubrication (which one and why?)
What is a shift kit and where can I get one? Can I do it myself?
Should I run a trasmission cooler? If so can an oil cooler be used (sorry if this seems rediculously obvious, to me they look the same)?
What options do I have for the factory open diff?
Ive seen the ex camgear can be good. Which one to get?
Where is the stock boost cutout?
All other info and suggestions welcomed.
Thanks so much!
Waldo

Wish I had a F#%ken awesome toyota.. saving for the goodness now.... stay tuned....
Thanks for your info. Didnt see there was a Soarer specific section. Thats great.
(do I ask a mod to move it or do I repost?)
Just leave it one of the mods will close it if you ask them and just ask the question again in the dedicated thread.

There seems to be no active dedicated soarer thread that I can find.
Lets put the soarer aside for now.
Can anyone help me out with these questions below:
(1) Can we run a stand alone ecu on an auto car?
(2) What must one do in order an auto to handle more power?
(3) Ive seen people run certain lubrication on autos (which one and why?)
(4) What is an auto shift kit and where can I get one? Can I do it myself?
(5) Should I run a trasmission cooler? If so can an oil cooler be used (sorry if this seems rediculously obvious, to me they look the same)?
Cheers
G'day mate,
I asked the same question on here a few months back, here is the thread.

Basically, because the 1JZ ECU controls both the Engine and Auto in one unit, you need an electronic shift box to replace the factory ECU's auto control. They are quite basic and can be assembled by a semi-competent operator, alternatively can be brought through MV Auto's. To answer one of your other questions, MV can also do the shift kits, or build a box to handle a bit of curry.
Oil cooler is perfect for a Transmission cooler (its the same shit)
Good luck!

You can, but you'll either need to keep the stock ECU to control the auto gearbox shifting, manualise the gearbox (via relays so that it follows the auto shifter at all times) or install a separate auto controller
There is a guide on this forums in regards to manualising the auto.
Depends what your definition of "more power" is
In general good maintenance (changing fluid regularly) in conjunction with a trans cooler is a good start.
A built auto, with upgraded clutch packs etc (i.e. from MV Autos) is most likely the next step...
Personally I lean towards running the lubrication that is specified from factory, changed regularly.
Generally changes the 'firmness' of the shifts, usually involves shimming the accumulators...
It is something that you can look at doing yourself... (google A340e shift kit)

Yes I'd recommend running a cooler.
Yes an oil cooler can be used (tans fluid is an oil)...
In most arrangements the stock system has a "cooler" built into the bottom of the radiator. I recommend going trans -> external oil cooler -> radiator cooler -> trans (i.e. also making use of the factory 'cooler')

You could run any standalone you want if you use something like a PCS Transmission controller for the auto:

Thanks for all the responses guys.
Sounds like manual is more of an attractive option. Ill do much more thinking however because I am keen on trying the auto.
On another note, I need to pass road worthy. Headlights are waterbound, and I have read some articles on how to fix this, but see that not long after cleaning, the lights acquire more water. I was thinking of buying new which would hopefully be nicely sealed.
