Hi all
Just recently my 5m e automatic MK2 supra blew its head gasket and I'm now presented with a decision. I can either stick with the original engine and repair it (engine was running fine before the gasket died. no smoke etc). Or, I can buy my friend's 5m ge engine and have my mechanic put that in.
I've so far come across a couple of write-ups on the net describing this conversion as "easy" although there always seems to be a grey cloud over how simple it is in terms of changing the electrics.
If anyone has done this conversion before, could you please shed some light on the following questions for me..
-Will the 5mge mate up to the 5me automatic gearbox?
-Will the 5mge mate up to a 5me exhaust manifold?
-Does the entire ecu and electrical loom need to be changed-over?
-Are there any differences in mounting (eg sump location) between an early 80s soarer 5mge and the MA61 supra?
-My car has a digital dashboard, so would that affect the conversion if the 5mge comes from a car using an analogue dash?
My mechanic already quoted the labour and seemed pretty easy-going about doing the job for me. But I want to make sure he has as much info as possible to avoid unexpected costs and gremlins along the way.
I only ever intended to keep this car stock and as a cruiser, so the gutless 5me engine would do just fine if a 5mge conversion proves too complicated or costly. I've got a Datsun 260z 2 seater project that's my fast car
Anyway if you guys have any suggestions here that would be awesome
Cheers in advance
Ric

Yes the box will bolt up.
The exhaust manifolds are different but the engine pipe will fit both manifolds.
Yes the engine looms need to be changed depending on the era of the 5MGE.
Unsure on sump locations but if different its just a matter of changing sumps and oil pumps.
Shouldnt make any differences with the dash.
Hope this puts a little bit of insight into your conversion.
Cheers Brett.
How much is your mechanic quoting you / hours??? Very interested..
I'm thinking of going this route with either 5/7M-GE very soon as my gearbox & engine are both showing too many wear & tear signs... And it's at 319,000KM. I want to keep mine automatic so will go the route of finding a whole car/half cut from a later model toyo (cressida low km likely).

If you get Gen1 5MGE (82/83, has square TPS, twin V belts on alt/wp, no knock sensor, vacuum advance dizzy) then the wiring will be plug and play (as they use the same ecu as the 5ME).
If you get any other 5MGE (there was a Gen1.5 which is a mixture of Gen1 and Gen2), you'll need to do a full wiring change.
All MX73's with 5MGE's are Gen2.
Sumps are the same between Soarer and Supra.

Thanks for the info there guys!
The engine I'm looking at is a 5mge from a MZ11 soarer, so it sound like it will be the later version. When you say full wiring conversion do you also mean body loom? I've got access to the 5mge ecu, AFM and engine wiring loom.
My current engine has a set of extractors and I'm hoping to keep them on the 5mge.
The mechanic is through a friend of mine so he should be honest enough. He quoted me $900 to fix the stuffed 5me or $650 to do a conversion provided I buy and supply the engine/accessories. I anticipate this could blow out closer to a grand but am still hopeful. The motor is only costing me a couple of hundred and has 100,000km less on the clock. So it seems better value than fixing the old 5me.
MZ11's can be either Gen1.5 or Gen2 (not sure if there were any Gen1's).
By full wiring conversion I just mean engine loom.

My MZ11's 5MGE was Gen 1

1981 baby! hahaha
as far as i know the wiring of a gen2 etc 5mge into the ma61 should really be almost no different or harder than any other engine swap, such as 7m, 2jz etc
Without being the one in each one of these threads to say "LOL PUT A 1JZ IN or a 2JZGE IN DERP DERP"
When 7MGE's are $500 - 600 and are a "bolt in" affair, and you after all are after a cheaper route.. ...why bother put a 5MGE in ......
Some might think its easier when registering.. Having an engine beginning with 5M rather than 7M and all that goes with that needed, engineering etc.. I know some people just get away with it anyway. The 5M is a little more original, if that's how people want to keep their MA61's for future. Also people are scared of 7M's and bhgs.
Congrats Ricardo sounds like a good deal... Hope I have things roll smoothly when I muster up some time for mine. How long is he looking at to do the full swap + electrics?

5m and 7M = BHG
5M to 7M is only 200mL's that "should" be able to go in with only a blue slip no massive increase in power or capacity.

5ME quoted 130 odd HP... compared to 7M-GE quoted to 190 odd HP...
Onc I did talk with RTA when I was looking at buying an un-engineered 7M-GE MA61 who advised me a 2.8L to 3.0L engine swap within the same family engine has no problem but when i quoted the horsepower difference - from manufacturer specs which they go off - he said they can only really accept 10% increase otherwise needs to be engineered.
One guy I spoke with selling a 2JZ-GE Manual MA61 said he registered the new engine on paperwork... without engineering (NSW)
Who knows.. seems lke people get away with all sorts of stuff

didn't realise the difference in factory Hp.
I knew about the 10% power increase but couldn't remember the increase % in cc's.
Doesn't surprise me the guy with the 2JZGE is sometimes it depends on the day you go to the RTA

Ive dropped my car at my mechanic for a variety of 5M niggling problems / oil leaks,,, but first I asked him to try find me a replacement 5M-GE.
So question wanted to ask you fella's:
Is there any advantage in performance/economy/anything with a Gen1.5 / 2 5M-GE on newer wiring/ecu than the Gen1/5M-E gear?
I want obviously dont want to be getting the same performance/400km a tank if this earlier electronics will be restricting it. I know its not a 2JZ and not to expect a helluva lot, but just wondering if the improvement over Gen 2 electronics > Gen 1 electronics have a vast difference across the 5m-ge.
