Default 20V Blacktop Timing Belt issues

I recently acquired a 20V Blacktop that had a broken timing belt. I started attempting to swap it over today but I cannot get the intake cam to fully rotate to line up the timing marks before re-installing a new belt.

As far as I was aware these motors where non interference. I have set the bottom end to TDC so I would of thought I should be able to rotate the cams to get them into the correct positions before fitting the belt. The Exhaust cam will rotate no worries but the intake just binds up about 2/3 of the way around.

Am I missing something or stuffing something up? There seem to be little information about these motors apart from this guide I was using.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Rotate the crank to halfway between TDC and BDC and see if you can rotate the camshaft. That way all the pistons will be halfway down the bores and way clear of the valves.

But yea, all 4AG(Z)E engines are non interference. (As long as the pistons, cams and deck height are near stock...)

Yeah I did that and reset the cam timing and then reset the crankshaft.

Still no compression though... I suspect she is fubar.

I pressume they run shims for valve clearances not hydraulic & if so just check the valve clearances at the back of the cam lobe if the clearances are excessive you have at the least sticky valves or possibly bent valves ...

To check for sticky valve's you could try & tap firmly on the cam bucket & see if the clearance changes, ie : if the clearance reduces the more you tap its probably just sticky valves ..

Id say it's got bent valves. The fact I couldn't turn the intake cam when the crankshaft was set at TDC for number one cylinder indicates that there was a clearance issue.

The car broke a drivers engine mount by shearing the mounting bolts on the block and the bolt heads ripped through the belt and where then shot out the side of the timing cover.

I may just strip it and sell it for parts. At least the quad throttle bodies are worth something.
