    Default ke 55e gearbox

    I have a ke55e corolla
it is a 4 door sedan and has a 4k motor
the gearbox is a 4 speed and it is broken
it is making clunking noises even when in neutral
my question is ( and I know nothing about corollas )
can I put a 5 speed gearbox in it without any major changes to the car?
can I use the same crossmember , drive shaft and clutch etc ?
also I am going to post in the wanted section
does the 4 or 5 speed have a number or is it just a ke 55 gearbox?

    thanks
    mal

if you have a 4 speed KE55, then a 4 speed from either a KE30/35 or KE55 will bolt in.

a 5 speed from a KE55 will also directly bolt in.

there may be some differences with the speedo driven gear, but the drive gear should be same (ie, pull otu the speedo driven gear, and compare the number fo teeth with the one from the new box, or just re-use the old one)

the 4 speed is a K40, the 5 speed is a K50., (however the 4 speeds are all called K40, from KE10 through to KE70, but there are soem significant differences between them) (the 5 sped from KE55 and KE70 are both called K50, but they have very different extension housings, and need different rear cross-member mountign method, plus the KE70 shifter is further back)

you can also use a KE70 5 speed, BUT you need to have an xtension housing from a KE55 anyway, and there may be some difference in position of the reverse gear switch

    old corrollas
    I have been offered a ke 70 5 speed
can I swap the extension housing from my ke 55 4 speed
over and then bolt it in using the original cross member?
    thanks

no, you need the extension housing from a 5 speed KE55 gearbox.

the shift rods and extension housing from a 4 speed are different....
also, the 5th gear is IN the extension housing, so it is a different shape between 4 and 5 speeds.

if you can find a broken KE55 5 speed and get the extension housing.. or just get a KE55 extension housing, then you can swap it onto the KE70 box no worries..
