you can swap the pulley but it takes some force. alternatively use the 4ac alt. this is easy to wire up and thats what i ran on my old hachi, works fine.
Hi all,
I'm doing a 4AGE conversion into my Sprinter in the near future and just had a couple of questions about keeping the standard Air Conditioning.
From what i've found on the old forums:
The standard 4A-C uses a Vbelt and pulleys on the crank, water pump and A/C compressor.
The 4AGE uses a mulit-rib belt, rendering the standard compressor and alternator unusable.
Now, i have a Red and black top 4age ( minus a few bits and peices) and wish to retain the air con in my car. I seem to have 2 ways to do the convo.
1. Use the 4AGE alt and A/C compressor (which i don't have)
or
2. Put the 4ac crank pulley on the 4age and use 4ac alternator and a/c. With mods to the brackets/timing covers to make it all fit.
Is this correct?
Obviously v belts are inferior to multi rib belts, but
I have read that the 4ac alternator isn't a good idea on the efi motor, - is this true? My 4ac alt has been rebuilt sometime in the last 6 months, so its in good nick.
or better yet-
Can i swap the 4ac alternator pulley on to a 4age alternator?
This would be preferable as it allows me to keep the factory compressor, have a higher capacity alternator and not have to further mod the 4age loom.
Would this work? Am i missing something?
P.S. Sorry for making my first question so long winded!

This is a really far out, witty and clever signature.
get a 4age altenator and aircon compressor and do it properly.

definitely worth getting the correct alternator and aircon compressor!

Cheers for the input guys.
Guess i'll have to hit the wreckers and look for an AE82 donor.
Unless someones got some spares lying around?... I don't have the rep to start a parts wanted thread
Someone will probably give you a 4AG aircon pump. 4AC alternators = NOT the goods, I certainly wouldn't bother bolting one of those on. Also, even if you COULD put the 4AC pulley on the 4AG alternator, you'd still have to change a couple of wires...
yeah, in retrospect that wasn't the best advice, i should clarify that i ran mine on carbs with an msd. please nobody reply with "carbies are bad" stuff, ive heard it all and no longer own that car. my new hachi is EFI and FI. if you plan on daily driving it is best to keep ancilliaries close to factory.
also put a wanted ad on the old forum in the meantime.

Cool, i'll hit the old forums with a parts wanted thread and some wreckers on my day off.
Is the 4age alternator interchangable with any other ( 4afe maybe? ) i don't like my chances of finding an sx or gti at a wreckers in Newcastle.
I have a air co compressor from my 4ag conversion, i dont know why but i decided not too use it.
Ive never used it and its been sitting around with me for 3-4yrs, before i got it i couldnt tell you when it was last used.
Motor had approx 110,000kms on it so i assume its in decent condition.
Its yours if you want it, i can get it too newcastle for you.
Cheers

4afe alternators are not compatible.
you can use bigport, smallport or 20V alternators..... just be sure you have the upper mounting braacket that suits the engine you have

You can also use an MX83 alternator - mechanically it will install in the RWD 4AGE alt location - I can't comment on FWD bracketry but should be the same given FWD/RWD alts are interchangeable.
The electrical connections end up in a slightly different location but in conversion cases this should make no difference - you would need to check your exact loom.
Mos.
fwiw, ae92, 101 and 111 salternators all work great
just change the back to suit the plug you run from your loom

im going to use a 4ac alternator with my RWD 20v conversion, there is an advantage to using a 4AC alternator is that it keeps it out of the way of the water components. jsut make sure you have all the same of everything if u have a different front part of your water pump the pulley for it wont line up with the crank pulley. im using a RWD water pump and the 4ac water pump pulley, crank pulley and alternator all line up perfectly.
juzzo's old AE71 with 20v Turbo was using a 4AC alternator with no problems. so can people please state EXACTLY what is so bad about them? i know your only using a single rib belt as apposed to a 5 rib belt with the 4AGE gear but aside from that?
