W5* can use cable speedos also
Hey everyone, forgive me for the newb questions, Im really just starting out learning here. I bought a Hilux with a 1g-gte conversion and a 5spd manual. Im assuming its a W5x of some kind, but not sure.
Anyway problem is the speedo is not working. Now as far as i can tell, this is because the Hilux uses a cable speedo and the W5x uses electronic sensors. Thats fine.
In the car there is a small Greddy auto timer on the steering column that is wired up to two sensors i can see in the gearbox, but it doesnt work. It turns on, and displays 'spd km/h' but gets no reading. Now im guessing this is because the sensors are dead. ( i should also not that when i press the 'select' button on the auto timer nothing happens, so maybe its not workin properly also?) The connections look ok, so i dont think they are at fault. Is there a way i can tell if it is the sensors that are dead, and where can i get new ones if so? Can u check the resistance across the sensors while stationary or something, i have a decent multimeter (but no real idea how to use it lol)
Also the guys at silverwater auto told me i can get some kind of electronic drive, cable thing that would allow me to run the speedo and keep the electronic signal for the ECU. Anyone know anything about this? It would be nice to have the stock speedo work, but i'll be happy if i can get the little read out from the Greddy timer thing.
are there any issues with using a cable speedo and the ecu signal? Im guessing it cant be any worse as its not working atm anyway!
I've looked at the gearbox and there are two sensors i can see, each with two ( i think) wires coming out. No cable that i can see. I screwed the top off one sensor and it has a sort of pin with a key coming out one side that goes inside the sensor thing, and and at the other end of the pin it has a square end that goes into the bit i unscrewed....if that makes sense! It felt to me like the square bit on the pin was very loose in there. The sensor also has 'Denso' on the side i believe... if any of that helps lol
Hmmmm pretty sure the sender doesnt look like that! I clearly remember it had a screw off top. I'll have a check under there tonight and see if i can get some pics! Thanks Cuzzo![]()
LUXPWR, best bet would be to put a pic up of what you need help with and someone will be able to identify it.
But in regards to speedos, the way Toyota usually wires up the speedo sensor is that the output from the gearbox goes straight to the cluster (either mechanical or electronic) which is then sent to the ECU (either converted from mechanical or straight if already electrical. Some models came with both electric and cable speedos and the part that goes in the gearbox is the same, the only difference is whether this then screws into a speedo cable or electric sender (MX83 for example).
The best way to get it running is to use the original vehicle setup and make sure the signal wire from the cluster to the ECU is wired up correctly. Have a search for other thread and wiring diagrams if you think it will help you.
I can get some better shots if necessary, but here are some from me manual conversion (which uses a W58). Below is the adaptor piece that contains the speedo output and is either connected to a electronic sender or cable in my case (the 90deg angle thing on the left hand pic, just above the mount).
And below are some other parts. The button type thing (bottom thing of the loom pic, similar to what Cuzzo posted above) is the reverse sensor and the other thing is an electronic speed sensor that is used for the ABS (black thing on the top of the gearbox).

If your Hilux is a W5X box the ecu doesnt need the speed signal anyway.
It is generally used for autos to determine shift points.
If you have a cable speedo just hook it up to the W5X box and it will work.
Ok here's a pic of the box on the left hand side. Im guessing the thing with the wires going to it is the reverse switch?
This is the sensor thing i pulled out from the right hand side of the box. Electronic sender? How can i tell if its this that is broken and not something else further up the wire?

Yep, first pic is the reverse sensor.
And while I'm not familiar with an electronic speedo, but it does look like it. Can you trace the wire to see if its still connected, and I would start looking though the Supra TSRM that will help you troubleshoot - http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar...3/default.aspx
Oh, and the speedo will be important for other things, but not as critical as an auto car as 2jzhilux mentioned.
Thanks for the replys fellas keep em coming! I got under there today and pulled the speedo sensor out and had a closer look. The little pin inside that has a square end was worn down so the square bit was just spinning freely inside the top. You beauty i thought, i'll just bodgey it up with some thread tape so its in there nice and tight again and it'll be sweet!
Nope, didnt work....so i followed the wires up checked them all out (man the amount of wiring in a car is scary) and dont think there were any breaks in there. Pulled the dash out and guess what? Its an electronic dash! So i guess the electronic sender is a good idea. There were some loose screws on the back of the dash what were connecting to the speedo so i tightened those up and hoped it may solve my problem....nope...
So im guessing that if the wiring is ok, everything is connected, and the little pin in the sender is spinning then the sender is dead. Also the fact that the square end on the pin was so worn down as to be spinning freely suggests the sender/sensor thing is dead right? Anyone know where i can get one from in sydney?
So i called SSS auto in Girraween - they only have the full electronic type (like the one in Cuzzo's pic) whereas the one i have is a mechanical to electronic type. Does anyone know if they are interchangeable?
Well guess what I managed to use my special modified screwdriver to pry the spring out of where it was. and get it into the right spot!!! Sweet! Ummm well kinda..... after i got the clip back in place i put the drive back in and gave the back wheel a few spins. The speedo drive turned a few times and stopped. Damn. Seems like the clip is cactus and wont stay clipped in there. Spewing is an understatement. Looks like its GPS for me... im still getting funny noises over 90km/h and its not the exhaust rubbing so maybe i should start saving for a new box....
