thermostat is supposed to open around 82 degrees or so if i remember right??
Anyone know what the correct operating temperature for a 4age or 4agze is?
I've looked and looked and looked and cant find anything in regards to what it should be running at.. at idle ect..
thermostat is supposed to open around 82 degrees or so if i remember right??
The thermofan switch in a 4ag goes open at 93deg.
So your normal operating temp is between 82 and 93. With a clean radiator core mine have all run in the mid-high 80's. The thermofan switch operates off the coolant after it passes through the radiator, which will be cooler than the coolant in the top hose.
Thanks JP, i cant add rep as i "need to spread some around" atm
factory thermostat is 82 degrees as you said vito, I was unsure about the operating temp especially at idle
with an unblocked radiator my 4ag's take a hell of a long time at idle to have the fans kick in.
How long roughly? With or without aftermarket management?
You retain the factory thermofan switch with an aftermarket ECU on a FWD 4ag, hard to beat the toyota system and reliability. Takes at least 15 -20 minutes in summer. If you've never had the radiator professionally cleaned and dont know it's full history then it's more than likely at least 30% blocked, most I've had done were 60% blocked. Tank gets removed and rods rammed down the cores to unblock them.
I've bought a new half sized ally radiator so this is just to get me by.
I have Bosch relays controlling the entire motor switched from the haltech, i dont quite have a decent condition factory fuse/relay box so i strayed away.
Mine takes about 10mins to get to 90*C at idle, in the shed with not tune, just 14.3 AFR and 20BTDC timing on the map.
Obviously the map needs a different tune but i doubt there will be much change in time to heat up.
Im inTAS so yes really cool air generally and honestly fans even after an absolute caning in summer barely kick in...dude the factory rads in these things are HUGE!!! Basically I cane my standard system and I dont doubt it for a moment.
Standard toyota system is good...
Personally I don't bother with getting them professionally cleaned / unblocked when you can source new ones for cheap enough.
Keep in mind i cannot physically retain my stock radiator because my turbo will not actually fit with nothing short of extreme over the top manifold runners ect..
Hence the half size radiator. So yeah as i said this is just to get me by.. i think it is a little blocked but i dont really care as its only temp for about 2 weeks.
Then dont fuss. And make a high mount ftw..hehe
10 mins to 90deg is pretty damn fast.
My car takes like 15-20 mins to get to 80.
My thermo fan, turns on at 82 degrees.
It is, however i suspect that the deletion of the factory water bypass is the reason, i have it sorted out now, drilled 5x 3mm holes in the thermostat outer ring, its probably takes about 15mins now, to flow the same amount of water as the orignial water bypass it actually wants about 3 more 3mm holes.. but it think its okay as it is, timing is also a **** to set with aftermarket pulley's, my original mark that i put on the gilmer drive wasn't quite on TDC, and i think the extra timing may have contributed to the quick warm up. I eventually went off the inlet cams timing mark, and has pretty much proven to be on the money.
Took it for a drive just before and although it may warm up to themofan on temp (93) sitting still, it cruises at about 85-86 on the highway.
case solved, i may rip this rad apart to see if its blocked once the half size job is installed.
cheers guys
