Default replacment carbies for a 18rgu

    Hay guys and gals,

so im having problems with the carbies in my RA23. Im running twin solex mikuni kogyo, that i think are just rather dead. We've put rebuild kits though both off them and their stil not holding tune, got to the point were it wouldn't even make 80kph. you'd tune it perfect, but 10k down the road it'd be gone. So im thinking i just need to get rid of the bloody things, the blokes at repco said that they were probably sucking air though the manifold or something.

I was wondering what would be the easiest swap. There a 40mm solex, and the engine is an 18rgu, with 288 cams, bored out to about 2.2l with an increased compression etc, so should i just get anouther set of 40mm solexes as i wont have to screw round with linkages and things. Or would it be better to gets some webbers that would be easier to tune, but i would deffinately have to redo the linkages. Or should i try giving it to an engineer to make sure all the manifolds faces are flat and sealing properly with the carbies. Dont really know much about carbies, still learning really, so any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers!

Edit: its using a type T solex i thinks.

Surprising that you are having such grief with Solexes....usually they are set and forget.......have a word to Rodger on here.....he is the master of all things Mikuni......he would be able to suggest possible reasons for them going out of tune so quickly........he can also refurb and rebuild them if necessary.....just seems strange to be going wrong that easily........stick with those carbs though cos they ain't all like that

As Rabbit has said, these rarely give any problems. Not getting over 80kph is a clue, things to look for is dirty fuel and or blocked fuel filter, dirt in the float bowls blocking main jets, clagged air filters, and worn dizzy. Check it out in that order as a process of elimination. If you have rough or no idle check out vacumm leaks and worn throttle shafts.

Failing all that, with the engine set up you have, 45mm DCOE Webers are my favs on a redline manifold, Sytec twin cables/linkage, ram tubes and socks.

    Hi,

As mentioned, the Solex are fine carbies and can go for years and years without any issues, except the occasional tweak and tune. If they have been rebuilt properly and tuned well then you should have no issues. It seems you have other problems that are causing your issues and whacking on a set of webbers or another set of solex won't fix it.

I'll second the notion of sending a PM to the username "Roger" on these forums.

Your engine doesnt sound "that" angry, so you should be able to use the Solex carbies no problem.

hmm, thanks guys. i'll try that trouble shooting idea. I have heard some good things about mikunis but they've just been giving me so mcuh grief. But if i cant find any blockages or leaks i'll get onto roger and hopefully he can straighten things out.

Hopefully it wont be to much of a bother :S

are you 100% sure the issue is with the carbs?

i had fucked around for ages with my corolla, clearning the carb, replacing a odd bit here and there, testing all the little bits and dooves and still couldnt figure why it was running so rich, had no power and kept fouling plugs. eventually i thought to checked the cam timing and the belt had skipped a tooth and was retarded, altho the belt was only 20~30k old. i guess maybe it was a cheap belt or something and didnt like 7~8k revs

that would be a pretty sensational effort on an 18RG.... since it uses a timing chain
