    Default diff suitability

    hey all,
this is my first post on toymods and i hope its not stupid question

what (apart from width) makes a diff suitable in a given application.

i am looking for diff upgrades for my TA22 and am wondering what options there are?
People rarely seem to put non-Toyota diffs in. Is this due to a hatred of cross-breeding or are other diffs just not suitable.

    thanks

Width is the main one, but you also need to consider the stud pattern as changing this is a bit of a pain. Also the availability of LSD centres is relevant to most, and of course overall mass as this will have a major effect on handling - it doesn't make sense to put a Ford 9" in your TA22 if you only have 200rwhp for example.

length is the main part of choice{ you can shorten if needed}. them main reason there isnt many other non toyota diff's used as toyota has plenty of strong ones.
your main choices are hilux {2wd} live axle{very strong for size} or if you have the money you can go a g series independant like in the cressida's and soarers etc.
but really you can use anything withing reason from any manifacturer. but a ford 9inch is a bit big unless you have a fair bit of power.
stud pattern is another thing to look at as having two diffrent patterns can be a pain.

S15 are IRS. do you mean just using the centre? cause you wouldnt be able to use the entire housing without converting your rear end to IRS.

Doesnt a TA22 have a "T" series diff. there are a fair few LSD's available and would certainly be able to handle 200hp's

thats what i mean, im trying to find out what choice of diffs i have.
so i cant have anything that is IRS.

sorry if this is a noob question, just tyring to work out some different options for my planned project of a ca18det into my TA22.

sorry raceflo, not really looking to buy at the moment, just scouting out possibilities.

    cheers
