There are at least 4 shifter positions for the W58, you obviously have the wrong one. From memory a GZ20 will need the rear shifter position. The good news is you can mix and match parts if you can find the correct shifter for your car.
Hey guys,
I have just put a W58 into my GZ20 soarer and its gone pretty much fine till this point. I just put the shifter and the trim that surrounds the shifter. The problem is now that the shiter wont go into 2nd, 4th or reverse as it hits the trim.
To solve this i reakon if i can reduce the bend on the shifter and straighten it so its more vertical it wont hit.
So could anyone recomend a way bending this or a better solution to solving my problem.
Thanks for your help,
ROb

i'm pretty sure this is the rear one, well its actually too long for the original whole and i needed to do some 'customising' of the transmission tunnel to even get it in.
Hmm, something is amiss here.
In the MA61/MZ10 series, the automatic holes are further back than the manual ones, so when putting a manual in, you have to trim the front of the hole.
It sounds like GA70 ones are not the correct ones.
If you've had to cut the rear of the hole just to get the shifter up, I'd suggest dropping the box and swapping the rear extension for an MA61/RA65 one.

Thanks again cruzida, i'll call some wreckers
ohh one thing, does a differnt extension housing change the point at which the rear seal and output shaft are on the gear box, pretty much will my drive shaft need changing? My guess is no.
You won't need to change the rear extension housing (but you will need to remove it).
Its just the bit that bolts down from the top that needs changing, and the elbow thing inside the gbox that the very base of the shifter sits in (housing has to be 3/4 removed to get this off.
Be careful putting the housing back on, as its very easy to knock the selector fork out of its hole. Check that all 5 gears + reverse work before you tighten it up.
Make sure the mounting faces are perfectly dry, and put some goo on for good measure.

cool cruzida, thanks for all your help again
I still think you should get some pics.
*BZZ I stuffed it, I did know the answer tho*
I was under the impression that the second rear most extension housing (which you say you have?) should fit and be correct ...
*edit* as crUZ says the SA63 is slightly more back...

well is there one that is more rear than rear? Like ultra rear? I'll get some photos tommorow.
The SA63 is one further back than GA70, but its only 1/2"

...... butt scratcher?!
does anyone know if diffent cars came with differnt length shifters? I really want one with lesser hieght and am contemplating hacking one up, but if i can source a shorter one from another car that would be better.
hmmm.. looks liek there is a fairly big area to bolt on... and it's nice and flat....Originally Posted by The Witzl
