    Default YR22 diff into TA22

Wondering if anyone has done the Tarago diff into a TA22?

From the reading I've done it will be 40mm wider each side, so I will expect it will need shortening. Will the axels need resplining also?

Has anyone got away with not shortening this diff?

Any info or considerations greatly appreciated...

    Hi there,
I fitted an unshortened Borg Warner R31 skyline diff to my TA23.
It is 52.5mm per side wider than the stock T series so your 40mm per side should fit comfortable...

    HOWEVER

Wheels will potentially become an issue. I still have the original stock steelies in 13 inch goodness which now look heaps better from being much closer to the outside of the guard. If I were looking for another set of wheels I would need something with bugger all dish (in old school talk) so the bulk of the rim sat inboard of the mounting face!

    Cheers,
    Jason

GW, I purchased one of these diffs for a mate, he fitted the Avante rear disc brakes, and fitted the bolt on flares. Looked the biz on his TA22. Check out the pics (Blue TA22 with GTV badges) from the Classic Celica get together, or dial up "raffy" on the forums, as he now owns the car.

    cheers Chuck

thanks guys that is really promising news.

Unfortunately I have dish and I don't want to let it go!! I will definately review the flares...If I don't have to get it shortened it will allow me to throw the money at an LSD perhaps

Keep in mind that axles after their spline reduce diameter to less than the main cross sectional area. What that means is that you can either shorten them by 20mm or less, or about 50mm or more, but not in between. If you were looking at taking off 40mm you may just have to remove 80mm from one side, which is beneficial from a cost point of view anyway.

The only issue you may have is clearance for the pinion flange/tailshaft on the tunnel.

It's a bit hard to explain but have a look and you'll see what I mean.

What LeeRoy is saying is that from factory the axles are the same length for left and right sides. Shortening only one axle, and only one side of the axle housing, would move your diff centre to one side.

Wanting to keep your "dish" is going to necessitate shortening of most axles, and their housing. Starting with a reasonably short assembly to start with may be a better option than the YR22. Have a look at Norbies axle database, he has all the measurements for the Toyota diffs in there.

A TA22 is also a bit harder than an RA23, or an RA28, as these cars are a few mm wider in the rear bodywork, the RA28 even more so than the RA23/TA23.

I have fitted the MKII Corona "F" diffs to all three types of early Celica's, and the TA22 caused the most grief with wheel offset. Ended up using FWD offset rims on the arse end.

    cheers Chuck.
