Mount the engine as far back as possible, remove the fan off the front and fit a thermo on the front of the radiator. Fiddle with the water hoses and the rest is smooth sailing.

He could get a RA21 engine crossmember from someone in America. They wouldn't cost much except for the shipping cost. The RA21 crossmember will bolt up to the TA22 and the 18RG.
He could then use a W50, custom tailshaft and use the original diff.

To expand on what ace said, all US Celicas had r series engines. So an 18RG will fit in the engine bay perfectly. If in doubt, go to the US celica website classic-celica.com and ask around.

There is NOT a clearance problem with cam cover and the bonnet with an 18RG and TA22. The USDM RA22 came with a 20r engine and a powerbulge bonnet as a result of the 20r having a clearance problem with the rocker cover.

The underside of the TA22 bonnet has these indents in it if you take a look. I don't know the reason why they are there but I have a feeling it is for the 18RG head.

    Hi,

Yes, you'll need a R-series cross-member to mount the engine. The height of the engine is okay (the RA25 has an 18RG in it and it's ostensibly a TA22 [long-nose] front end and bonnet).

You'll need to mate the 18RG to the T-series gearbox. I think he'd do best to put in a W50 gearbox and tougher diff 'cos although the T-series stuff is strong, all 18R powered (especially 18RG powered) drive-train is stonger.

Also you'll need an 18R radiator 'cos the water outlets are in a different place on the 18RG compared to the 2T. Or, you can try and weld in extra pipes to make it connect - assuming the existing 2T radiator is adequate for the task of colling the water.

An 18R radiator (I assume you mean from an RA23) won't fit in a TA22, it's much wider. It's not a big deal to get the TA22 radiator modified though.

...my '74 has this conversion and you can use the existing centre console but need to cut the ash tray out and the gearstick will come through that hole and you just put the ashtray back in the original gearstick hole....don't know what gearbox i have for that but thats the way it is in my car....also i have a Datsun 180B radiator in my car with the inlet and outlet pipes changed on them..plenty of cooling and fits like a charm.......and a thermo fan too which does the business.......the 18RG in mine is like 3cms from the firewall so it is a bit squeezy but all fits......i don't know all the mods the previous owner did but i can give you measurements and descriptions of stuff if needs be.........good luck with it and you'll be happy when it's done

Didn't the RA23/RA28's come with a T series diff anyway? and only the GTs (with 18RG) had the F series? The T series should cope with the 18RG for a while, but this motor is worked isn't it? Maybe upgrade then....

Yes, RA23 and RA28 Australian model cars came with T-series rear ends.
It will cope with an 18RG for a while, but be prepared to break the odd one.
We've lost teeth on the drive pinions of two 4.1 T series diffs. The 3.9 is holding strong though.
Oh, no burnout was ever done wth those diffs to break them either, they only got general hard driving with no clutch drops. The 3.9 was fully rebuilt with LSD. Perhaps the 3.9s are stronder, they should be weaker though, less teeth.
