Exclamation Driveline/Drivetrain upgrades for st184? 185 box & axles fit?

    Hi,

Am just thinking aloud really, have upcoming projects after my 162 begins behaving.

I have a gen 3 3sge that i'm planning to plonk on a turbo after being informed that they are meant to be good for 400hp. + with oil cooler and oil squirters, i figured i couldn't go wrong.

besides that though, I would be looking at a transmission upgrade and drive shaft upgrade as i want reliability (probably only want 6 to 8 psi, intercooled of course, thats enough for me at the moment), whilst still doing the smart thing and making the cv's the 'weaker' link in the whole operation as opposed to busting up transmissions and gearboxes. Makes it easier to fix and would act like a 'fuse' to protect the rest of the drivetrain.

none the less i still want it to take the power, and i won't go any higher in the psi range without comp ratio adjustments. I plan to hit up some skids and launch nice and hard . IE: take abuse, but still drive me home. Its what the n/a 184 was great before before its head warped (5sge prototype testing gave it a fatal spell of softness when working on dodgy advice with ignition timing)... Although it wasn't the quickest machine it was fun at tellin the n/a lancer and civic ricer boys and occasional commodore to go home .

My stock 184 gearbox is flawless, but i have been informed that it won't suit the gen 3 3sge. YET TO BE CONFIRMED. On that note of gen 3 3sge relevent, for a st202 transmission i'm already aware of the different mounts i will have to fab and the N-S cross member clearancing for a relevant transmission to suit. But that was prior ot thinking forced induction. Can a st185 or st205 gearbox be adapted to fit? can the tail shaft output componentry that will interfer with my firewall be removed and just 'plated' off? Perhaps would a later sw20 turbo gearbox suit? i have found a thread with linkage adaptation for rwd mr2's to fwd celica applications, again that was for a sw20 n/a setup though.

Can st185 cv shafts fit? would i need new hubs/hub carriers?

I'd rather not have to go through the issues of fire wall modding, and don't want to involve the expense of an engineer, only blue plate compliancing. Which should be alright, as according to vehicle modifications brochure from Queensland Transport engine swaps of more power from the same vehicle just need the equivalent or more brake/suspension componentry on that 'higher' model. IE: case of just slotted rotors and i maybe some more aggressive braceing/swaybars.

the mounting adaptation on the transmission side (passenger side) and the cross member clearancing will just look like stock... lets keep that hush hush.

    So whats ur ideas?
    Chris.

hmm... sometimes the simpler idea of just stickin to a stock gen 3 and see if the 5sfe transmission suits sounds more appealing...

I guess it'll still be zippy with a set of ITB's and headers? But while i'm at it i might as well go nuts then pull it apart again to change my mind. its not like its a daily driver or anything... yet

well the gen3 has 180oddHP, and as far as i'm aware only some model st202's got the beefier transmision. i think they had more syncro's possibly LSD, but this may only be the beams powered ones?

the s54 box from the 5sfe will still bolt to the 3sge. plenty use them for 3sgte swap's tho peple have different ideas on the longevity of a setup. but if you want to do hard launch's then i think the week spot on the s54 is the diff.

if you want a hi-po FWD then you'll want/need an LSD.

the turbo mr2 box(E153) will also fit you'll need the shifter linkages from the gt4 variant, and you need to mix and match driveshafts, better still is the V6 camry box as it's already setuip for FWD and it's essentially the same gearbox.

but i don't know if the camry boxes had LSD's and most early 1990-93 sw20 boxes don't have LSD's so you'd want a later model box and you need the shaft that came with it as the stock viscous LSD's post 93 have a special spline on the shafts.

gt4 boxes need to be dissassembled and rebuilt to use for FWD only applications.
