Default CV boots SW20NA, anyone done it, tims and tricks appreciated

    Hi,

just picked up a new set of boots and after being quoted a mint by the mechanic to replace them decided to do it myself. Since ive already done the rear engine mount and the car is off the ground, ive done CV boots before on other cars, but is there any tricks or tips that anyone can share to do it on the MR2, BTW CV's appear fine just need to do the boots as theyre a bit old and crappy and "dont pass muster" for blue slip

mate either way, the CV shafts need to be removed.. if you dont know how to disassemble CV shafts then i would recommend taking the shafts down to a CV specialist for him to put stretch boots on the shafts for you, itll be cheap and simple, and cos youll be doing the hard yards youll save big time..

    - raise the vehicle on jack stands
    - remove rear wheels
    - remove CV shaft split pin (if it has then) and CV nut
    - disassemble hubs etc, i usually remove the upper ball joint and tie rod end so i can move the hub completely out the way
    - one the CV shafts are free from the hubs, you can get under neath and see what brackets etc are holding the shafts to the motor/block etc, if nothing there, proceed to next step
    - get a pry bar and CAREFULLY rest against gearbox and softly wedge out CV shafts (as i said, BE CAREFUL too hard and you could damage your gearbox/shafts etc, also gearbox oil may leak out of seal where CV shaft has been removed so get a tray)
    - get stretch boots put on shafts, or disassemble shaft end and replace boots, pack with greese etc
    - reinstall everything removed
    - check gearbox oil level, may require jacking up front end on stands to level out the car to get the correct level
    - start and drive, do skids nd shit

    hope that helps

yeh the mr2 is essentially a front mounted eng setup placed at the rear, so you'll have no probs.

if you hadn't already bought the boots you can get split boot's which don't require shaft removal, but they are more exp than the normal boots.

the NA shafts have a 30mm axle nut which you'll need a deep socket for, but you prob already know that

split boots sound interesting tell me more, the full set of 2 inners and 2 outers cost me under 80 bucks and the time required is worth at least $150 more and im realy not keen on having to spend 6 hours doing this

They are probably similar to the GT4 shafts, so its quite easy.

Ive used multi-fit and stretch boots before... they failed very quickly
Ill only use genuine or correct fitting boots (Kelpro brand are good & cheap for example) now.

Pull the shaft out of the hub first, then unbolt the inner CV from the gearbox.
Make sure you dont over/under extend the CV joints, dropping out the balls = lots of pain to get them back together.
Remove the circlip from the end of the shaft at the gearbox end.
    Slip off the CV joint.
    Replace boots.
    Reassemble in reverse order.
