I didn't bother with an R154 and went straight for the t56's big brother (TKO600). T56 is a good choice though and adaptor rings to fit readily available.
being searching for the last 30min or so and got nothing that was really helping me out.
im putting a 1uz turbo in a ke26 rolla. stockish motor with aftermarket ecu, differnet injectors, nothing to crazy to the motor.
not sure what gear box to use, r154 or t56?
the car is more or less a weekend thrasher/summer nats car sort of thing, just for burnout, etc really.
i can get a r154 setup for a good enough price at the moment with convertion gear. (crs gear)
will it be strong enough? im lead to beleave the T56 would be stronger but would it be needed?
im not looking a running tubs and doing big launches (car will look as stock as possible)
r154 looks to maybe beable to fit in easyer than the t56 and possible the shifter possition is a little shorter also.
i also dont need 6 gears, ill just gear it to hold in 4th
and then im also running all toyota running gear, not that it really matters though.
whats your thoughts of the sizing, strength, price, etc of these two gearboxs?
cheers, dan

R.I.P.
how much would it cost to get the t56 conversion gear ? if a r154 with os giken gearset will work out cheaper i would suggest that
Both boxes are strong enough so no problems there, but now that adaptors for the Tremec boxes are available the T56 would probably be the one to go for as chances are it'll be newer and nicer shifting.
The R154 is probably only preferable where youre fitting it to a car where it was a factory option so everything bolts up (eg, and in my case, Z30 Soarer) but hey if you can score one cheap and its in reasonable condition then yes it will be fine. There are a number of aftermarket parts available for them to further strengthen them (aside from the complete gearsets) if you wish
I dont think price-wise theres much in it?
Let me get this straight, you are building a thrasher, and you want to spent almost $4,000 on a gbox/clutch/flywheel/bellhousing?
Riiiiiight.
If its just for what you said in the first post, surely an autobox with a shift kit would be a billion times more suitable, and a helluva lot cheaper

thanks for the info, i think ill go with the r154 and if it doesnt work for me then ill sell it and go in the T56 option.
MOOKIE - not sure what the total price of getting a T56 in there is? ive got an adaptor plate though, but the R152 setup will cos me under 2k
Sciflyer -R154 setup bolted in drive away is goin to cost me around 2k, so i think its a pritty good price?
CrUZida, i would rather eat my own poo than use an auto, i hate them, never used one in any of my cars yet.
for the price ive got a motor, gearbox and convertion gear for, all up even bolted in a running in my ke26 is going to cost me under the 4k mark.
and the car will be street rego'd also, so not just driving it around in circles and thats all it does.
but if im not happy with the r154 i can always sell it off and use a T56.
thanks for the help and advice guys.

oh and has any one else got any input on the strength of the r154 for a 1uz turbo, thats goin to be the main thing really, not much point running it if its goin to just break, even if it is cheap.
cheers, dan

Its the torque that could kill it, but if you are mechanically sensitive to the box i'm sure that it would be fine .. They will handle around 350 ish rwkw behind a 1JZ, without much drama, but your torque figures will no doubt be higher though ( depending on boost etc ) ..
You mention that you want to drive it on the road as well ? i pressume you are not going to try & get it engineered as you would not get that sort of combo through these days ..
$2k is a ridiculously good price.
R154's are normally $1600
Bellhousing is about $600
Flywheel $500
Cheap puk clutch to handle the boost $800
Decent drivable clutch $1800+
Total = lots.

Yeah, the man is right. I went through all the options before deciding on the T56. Everything adds up,

I would definately go thru the box with new shifter bushes at the minimum, and whatever bearing retainers, shift forks and thrust washers you can afford

You dont have to but for a boosted UZ it would be good piece of mind

OT slightly, has anyone used that short shifter listed on driftmotion??
If so would i find that the syncros in my box now wont keep up with the shift and therefore every gear will be smashed through??
My shifter seems to be over to the passengers side more than the driver, may be easier to replace than rebend.
ok well it bought the setup and its on the way, so ill find out how i go in time![]()

Thanks for spotting this, im on the lookout for a short shifter and never noticed that one before
Again, if you can pop the shifter off easy enough might be worth checking teh bushes? My shifter seems to be over to the passengers side more than the driver, may be easier to replace than rebend.
