Have you pulled the torque converter out yet? Once that is out of the way it should be easy to get to.
I have done plenty and I haven't found an auto yet that needs the front housing removed.
It should be a similar size seal to the front crank shaft seal and the same to change. As you said, "get seal out (probably destroyed) and just tap new one in".
The front trans seal actually seals on the snub on the rear of the torque converter. Make sure you polish that surface up with fine wet and dry to give the seal a fighting chance.
