    Default Help - Error code 22 on MX83

    I have a really basic question, probably not critical, but I am getting a code 22 on my 91 Cressida Grande, this is the explanation for a code 22:

    22 H2O temperature sensor no signal at THW

    I had a code 21, and Code 22, I replaced the O2 sensor, and now I only get the code 22, so the O2 sensor definately was faulty, and for the most part the car has been ok, but now lately it's back to having the same issues, (rough idle and random bouts of poor performance)

    But the thing I am not clear on is the "THW".

    Code 24 has "THA" can anyone explain these two acronyms please?

    I know there is a small sensor on the water pump, I am guessing it is referring to that sensor, I am not sure there are any others, I just want to be clear.

    Cannot see an explanationf or THW or THA anywhere, thanks guys.

    Sean.

    you might want to rename this thread before it gets deleted ...

    to something like "error code 22 on Cressida"
    THW = temperature ??? water
    THA = temperature ??? air

    Shhh.....I was hoping that I was quick enough so that no one noticed......

    Now that the title is more descriptive I am sure someone will be along with the answer to your problem.

    Cheers,

    Pete

    lol, thanks Pete.

    oldcorollas, that was exactly my thinking, but it is driving me mad not knowing for sure, I have to know, my main concern was wether or not there is another sensor, cause I did replace that sensor a few years back, I guess being an OEM it is liable to fail?

    its reffering to the coolant temperature sensor mate.. by any chance does it run abit rough/rich when its cold/hot?, btw, id hazard a guess and say the CTS is usually on the intake manifold or around the thermostat housing, not on the water pump.. either way when its out it just looks like a mini brass pole lol

    did a quick google..

    THA - Total hydrocarbon annoyliser
    THW - Temperature heat and water

    dunno if there correct exactly but make a little sense to me

    Ok guys, I did a search of "MX83 water temp sensor" and I think this thread is helping, no reference if it is actually

    code 22, but I think that this will sort it now, I can assume I can replace that sender and it is solved.

    Thanks Pandaah,

    You are right, it is a little brass pole, but that sender has a single terminal, and of course earth's on the body of

    the thermostat (not water pump, sorry) and the other sender they refer to is the one for the ECU, the one we are

    talking about, the CTS is for the guage, and has no effect on the performance if faulty/dsiconnected (as far as I

    know) but this is DEFINATELY an issue with the sensor that signals the ECu because yes Pandaah at cold it is running

    like a dog, at least at startup, then it comes good, and it was SOOO much worse when the O2 sensor was dead.

    Here is a picture I took, I am guessing the sensor I need to change is the one above the CTS not the one on the very

    top which I am guessing is the Thermostat control?

    I disconnected it, it's the upper circled one, the dark green plug is at the bottom of the photo.

    In that thread, AdmiralCoffee stated in the title "Thermo Housing" which I am assuming is the TH in the THW and THA.

    Thanks guys.

    Wow, a lot of guessing at what THA and THW mean in here.

    I've never seen any documentation that lists what the letters in THA or THW stand for...

    I have seen the following listed numerous times however

    THA = Air Temperature
    THW = Water Temperature

    Sounds like you water temp sensor is shagged (code 22).
    You can check a number of things before buying a new sensor, such as the resistance of the sensor (if you test at the ECU then that will also tell you if your wiring is OK).

    Some info in the below... (i.e. resistance curve of sensor )

    THW is Water Temperature
    THA is Air Intake Temp.

    seanoz, replace the sensor with the yellow plug, thats the CTS, the single terminal one must be for the gauge..

    to simplify it, replace the upper sensor with the yellow plug, thats the one the ECU relys on for temperature reading and fuel quantity

    Thanks mate,

    I might put in a request in the parts section then, because these are $85
    for one from Repco, Supercheap can't find it on their system, I might call to get a price, but surely another member would have one lying around?? A used one should do fine.

    Thanks for that pandaah,

    Who is veales? - oops, did a search, yer they are WA only. So you think they'd be quite cheap even with post? Their site is not taking orders.

    I might try the forum sponsor if that is not possible.

    Yer, well you guys are lucky, from what I can gather, the prices are very good, they only want $34 plus $16 post, that is still $30 less than Repco here!
