Most of the AE86 Apex models have power steering. So you can get it all working with factory parts. Lots of people should have the P/S pumps and brackets left over from their import motors.
Hi all,
i picked up an AE70 hardtop coupe recently, and im currently performing a 4age conversion on it, but i have run into a few technical difficulties...
the car has Power Steering, and i want to retain the PS, so im wondering if anyone here has/is running a RWD 4age with PS?
and if so, what parts did you use? im aware that i will probably need to re-run the lines
the motor im using is a FWD bigport 4age

yeh i figured i could use all the JDM gear, but i dont really want to have to spend the extra money on the rwd alternator and water setup
If it is the setup that I think it is could you just use the A/C compressor as an idler and run the belt as per normal?
Alternatively I have eliminated the A/C and used a ribbed pulley for the tensioner and run the belt the other way around this pulley to tension the belt. Has not ever let me down this way.
i'd try to adapt the PS pump off the 4AC onto the 4AGE, might take some doing but would be the easiest way to do it (no arsing around with plumbing)
I'm guessing that you're using all the fwd ancilleries on the motor. If that's the case, then why not use the PS pump and bracket that came on the AE82s?
The throttle body has idle up functions for the PS and the aircon which sit on the same bracket. If you've already got the PS rack then you just make up the lines and away you go.

yeh ill probably go that route, only thing im thinking ill have problems with is the idle up gear...seeing i will getting the manifold cut and shut
A cut and shut manifold won't affect your idle up gear as it attaches to the bottom of the TB. What it will affect is the PCV routing - ie. you'll need an oil catch can.

As a side note, the PS bracket is also the A/C compressor bracket if you want a bit of aircon action to keep you cool in summer. I spoke to an A/C guy a while back and he quoted roughly $500 to convert from R12 gas.

yeh im not so fussed about aircon as im used to not having it, and im not out much during the daycheers for the heads up though
