Thumbs down Alternator dead? What the fuDge happened

Drove down the st today at lunch, stoped to get fuel turned the car off could smell that electrical death smell suspected it was the alternator, checked it, was red hot and the smell was coming from that area of the engine.

Need some thoughts, I'm gonna rip it off tomorrow take it in to get rebuilt, would a dud battery cause this? It has gone flat over a period of 24hrs over the last couple of days, so I'm guessing it's Fu ked never buying oddesy again.

Alternator was fuckkn hot when I checked for the smell, like I could not keep my hand on it for even half a second..

Have u misse anything I dunno if I can bear not driving this for another period of time

    Hi,

Sounds like your alt has died... got an internal short and cooked itself. Probably been on its way out for a while and hence the reason the battery not being charged properly.

Mine suddenly died a few weeks back (1JZ). The rectifier was fried. ... Rectifrier... Most of the diodes in the rectifier were not doing the right thing anymore. They were visibly fucked too... the multimeter wasn't required to determine that.

I couldn't find a suitable replacement at short notice so i had it rebuilt with new rectifier, regulator, brushes, machined slip rings and a schmick paint job.

Mine died. Noticed Some dash lights came on. About 3 days later the car was flat. Diodes burnt out, actually the entire thing was cooked. Got a second hand one from wreckers but but new brushes in it.

Must be alternator death season as I had a similar prob a few weeks ago. Managed to drive the thing home from work. Everything turned off. Optima battery was reading around 9volts, gosh everything was dim!

My Optima battery basically saved me. They're big powerful bastards.

I didn't drive far, but it meant i could drive with the headlights on with no noticible effect on the car's performance. The battery was reading 11 volts with the car on and the headlights off.

I think its in a dying stage, def on its way out though, has about .2V charge on top of the battery voltage on idle, and around 13.5-.13.8 at enthusiastic cruise speed.

They do make the elecy death smell when they start to die yeah?

just trying to rule things out i.e dead short somewhere, dud battery ect..

Pull the belt off and check that it still spins freely. I had the bearing(s) go on one of mine once and the wiring caught fire one hot summers day from the heat

The wiring that plugs in and bolts onto the alternator caught fire, it was the whatever was in the factory loom... but the gauge of the wire wasn't what caused the fire, it ignited when the car was switched off

+1 to alternator death season. I had a reek from the same area, battery in previous 2 days had been showing signs on the dash lights and voltage dropping.

Went entirely flat no start, with no NRMA. Jump started many times and drove home at 12AM from Parra to Liverpool at 50km/h with no lights
