Does it do it when cold, or just when hot?
Hello guys,
I recently picked up a ct20b turbo 2nd hand, any recently fitted it up to my car. Although on my fist few drives with it, it seems to have bit of a wine and I'm not sure what it could be.
The turbo spins freely and smoothly by hand. There is also visible gaps between the turbine and the housing so I'm not sure what it could be?
at idle there isn't any real noise, but when it starts to boost it comes on louder. could this be a thrust bearing or similar?
Any suggestions?
Ben

My CT26 used to do it when cold, sounded like a kettle whistle.
When warm it went away.
Ive since rebuilt it with new bearings & seals (ebay kit), which fixed it.

i'd pop the compressor housing off and make sure it's not rubbing the housing. i had a 16g that did that when it died.
any shaft play in and out?
from experience, any turbos ive had that whine quite loud, break shortly after.
I had one do it that didn't get enough oil in the bearing after being dry for a while. It stopped after I oiled it manually through the feeder hole with some lightweight oil just to get it going.

My previous T25G got a hell whine up when boost came on - had everything to do with the 3 badly broken compressor blades...
Hopefully not your issue!
Cheers,
Jason

479RWHP on 50psi and 70psi hasn't broken her at the track!
It still has all the blades but there are some minor chips on the leading edges of some of them. I wouldn't have thougth they would cause that noise.

Okay so with any luck the "Whine" noise was just a boost leak.
Went over all my pipe (there isn't that much of it) and found some parts which were suspect and from a quick drive around the block it appears to have gone. It is now back to a very loud induction noise only![]()
