    Default 18RGEU into '81 4WD Hilux

    Hey guys

Doin this conversion at the moment and run into a bit of a snag.

Bit of background, the engine is an 18RGEU w twin webbers - see 18RG thread for pics of engine.

And she doesn't want to fit in. Basically its the webbers hitting the brake booster

We are using the engine mounts that came with the engine and have yet to try the mounts from the 18RC that we are replacing.

So can anyone point me in the direction of a brake booster that is known to fit in this conversion, or am I gonna have to get a remote dealie?

    Many thanks, Jon

This about the extent of info I can find on here,

"I just put an 18rg into an rn46 hilux. Because the cylinder head w/carbs etc is so wide i needed to move the engine over to the passengers side a bit. If you look at the engine from the front you'll notice that the crank is off centre ie closer to the passengers side of the block. In order for the crank to be kept in the centre of that car so the drive train is straight the steel blocks that the engine mounts bolt to are different lengths. We swapped these over and that moved the engine about 3-4 cm further to the passengers side to aid in clearing the brake booster. " http://toymods.org.au/forums/showthr...?t=222&page=73

So I guess it'll be a mix n match with the engine mounts, much better than relocating the Brake Booster!!!!!

i had one in my RN41 hilux... no drama's at all, but i couldn't get filters over the last one... the amount of lift those motors have it didn't bother it... but i could have dented in one of those ramflo style oval elements, or made an airbox for it..

mine was running the stock solex carbs... are the brake boosters smaller in the 2wd? or maybe the solex carbs are narrower?

    Hi,

Dunno... finding smaller brake booster sounds easier than all the other stuffing around.

Thanks guys, its an RN46 4WD

    mattysshop: pics would be awesome!!

river: thats what I thought as changin a booster is much easier than relocating or fabbing custom engine mounts.

    Any suggestions for booster alternatives?

Please excuse all the noob questions I'm more of a Datto head and dont know toyotas too well

I gotta say this engine looks mad I really dig it, kinda like an FJ20 or sumthin, I cant wait to get it in there and hear those webbers at full noise!!!!

yep i found pics, but ran into problems getting them here to my work PC, would you belive i had no cd's, usb sticks, dvd's, ANYTHING to put them on to bring them here (no net at home, yeh stone age i know)...

BUT the 2WD RN41 had about 20mm clearance between the base plate of the filter and the booster... so it fit no worries with the filter off.. but i couldn't run them with it on... as i was only driving it on the road it didn't bother me... eventually when my old man was driving it around he dented in a ramflo filter and it fit around the booster...

unfortunatly we had to run the cast manifold, instead of the extractors from the celica... thinking that they actually looked not too bad... well no... the thing no longer wanted to rev despite the high diff ratio (the RN41 already had a 5spd W50 conversion), so if you have a set of extractors, or even if you have to get some made, doesn't have to be tig welded and mandrel bent with merge collectors etc etc.. just anything better than the cast manifold i highly suggest it!!

Dont worry about the pics mate, if you can get them thats great

Yeah I was lookn at the cast manifold and thought it looked quite nice too, like it just needed some tuned secondaries into a free flowin 2 inch system and voila a nice zorst.

Were you running the factory secondaries on your hilux?

Anyone know what sort of HP they can support?

Anyone know the length of the factory secondary pipes?

    Cheers, Jon

Just an update - Engine went in fine, will need, as others have found out, to make custom air filter but the engine is sitting in there real nice.

All thats left today to do is starter motor install, wire up a fuel pump, fill with fluids and pretty much drive over to the exhaust place and get it all joined up.

Frackin sweet, easy as conversion - even sat in there on the mounts that came on the engine, gotta love japanese engineering!!!

Ive just done the same engine swap into a RN41 hilux, all i can recommend is a short manifold (i have solex carbys), shortest ramtubes/stacks i could get (25mm tall i think) and i had to use sock type filters, think they were chopped down a bit can't recall, the rear filter fouls the brake booster a bit but its still doin its job. thought of finding a smaller booster but too much effort, pre-oiled sock filters bout $100 for four, cant remember how much the ramtubes were.

Cheers mate we'll make something up for it but thats the least of our problems.

The engine is blowing a fair bit of smoke so it looks like its off with the head to see how bad the damage is.

Any good tutorials around on RG(EU) sereies heads?
