How much oil for W5x?

I've dropped the oil out of the box in my RT142 (dropped being the operative word, most of it now resides in sopping wet towels).

How much should I put back in?

Also, I've heard of people using auto fluid to quieten a noisy box... I don't have any such problems, but I'd rather avoid buying a stack of manual gear oil as I've already got a $40 container of the Toyota auto fluid there... any dramas using it?

You fill box up until it comes out of the filler hole. just under 2ltr ( about 1.6 from memory)

there will be two bolts/plugs on the side of the gearbox. the bottom one is to drain it, the top one is the level indicator plug.

(on level ground) drain the oil via the bottom plug and replace it. remove the top plug and put gearbox oil in there until it spilss out. put the top plug back in.

it should be OK to use ATF, but personally i would just use gearbox oil.

U souldnt use auto fluid on an old worn in gearbox.
Use auto fluid for new whiny boxes to ware them in.
And yes, u fill it till i comes to the filler hole (jsut let it over flow), but the car must be flat, so dont jsut have the front jacked up...

Just get some Penrite gearbox oil. It cost me $21 for 2.5l, and the W5X takes, you guessed it, 2.5l.

yeah its about 2 1/2 ltrs last time i filled it up.
You only put in Auto fluid if you box is totally &*($ and you can't afford to buy a new box, you generall use a 50/50 blend.
Its supose to help crunching gears, it's not 100% fix but it does help in some boxes. If your box doesn't have a problem then just run some good synethic gbox oil. It hasn't got LSD or anything it should be a 75-90w. The LSDs are different again.

Redline or motul gbox oil is excellent if you can afford it.

On another similar note with putting oil in, i think that alot of people including me and a friend on saturday, were unable to undo the filler bolt, hence the question about oil capacity. We didn't wanna have to pull the box out so i'm sure alot of people are in the same boat with filling it up and want the capacity so they can fill up the box from the shifter. Just a thought

The question re: the manual gear oil is that after loaning my girlfriend some money, and buying a race bike on the weekend, I have $40 to my name until next Tuesday but no transport. If I can put auto fluid in to get by to pay day then that's what I'll do, and then drop the fluid in the next few weeks for proper manual gear oil... at least then the box gets a bit of a flush out.

I was told by someone I do respect the opinion of, that they've used auto fluid in their manual box. While not really causing any issues in normal running, it doesn't really offer any protection if the gears get crunched. Personally though, i'd just be doing what I did and dropping in some decent, but cheap manual gearbox oil.

Actually a lot of manufacturers specify atf for there manual boxes from factory. Your box according to the BP tech book uses energear easy shift total of 2.7 litres from dry.Given your only talking a week or so atf shouldnt cause any problems. I ran my T50 for 10 years of rallying on atf as it produced a better clutchless shift but long term reduces bearing life.

i use penrite hypoid gear oil in my r154 gearbox and it works great. smelly shit tho!!!
