EGR should only work when your cruizing and above idle, and not when cold...
you could be onto something there with the EGR diaphragm being stuck and causing recycled gas to be used and stuff up the mixture when cold

Phil, ask Jezz if you can grab the EGR off his 1MZ engine I gave him to see if the problem goes away.. then at least you know if you'll be wasting your money or not
