Quite a lot, from memory - We used to run over 12:1 compression on the old race engine and it had flat-top pistons. The little recessed pockets that show the factory limit of how much you can shave off were completely gone.
Hi
How much can i safely shave of a 3k head, without having to do any other modifications?
1mm, more? does anyone know?
Im also looking for complete tune up specs on the 3k, oil capasity with and without filter change, valve clearance, timing specs, breaker gap etc.
Does anyone have this info and could post it i would be very greatfull
Thanks in advance![]()

Thanks for all ur great info, a round of good rep for everyone![]()
if you take off too much, you might need to get the coolant passages at the sides TIGd up and drilled out, to help with stability of the deck

I really dont want to take off that much, looks like i will settle for 1mm, maybe 1,5mm max.
I took off 1mm on a 4k head once many years ago and everything was perfect for a daily driver, but if i still can squeeze out a lil more compression safely, it costs the same anyway, so why not.
Does 1,5mm sound like overkill or should it be fine? when people talks about shaving their heads to the limit, i have no idea if that means 2mm, 3mm or more, so im just asking to be sure.
Pictures of the engine i will be posting within a few days, i still need to identify it.
Thanks again for ur help![]()
what are you trying to achieve? what octane fuel do you have available? what camshaft wll you use?

Im just trying to make it run as economic as possible, everything is stock, carby gonna be tuned as lean as possible, only mod is denso irdium sparkplugs. and of course the shaved.
I also have another question
i dont know if they have used a 3k starter or a 4k starter, but will the starter solenoid be the same anyway? i see the starters aviable for my car from toyota is a 0,6kw version and a 1kw version, looks like the later is just a sub. should the starter have a number that i can identify it with?
Thanks again![]()
octane fuel here is 95
