Im having to change over the clutch in my st184 celica and I have the usual issues with 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to second gear syncros
What sort of costs would it cost to rebuild a gearbox? Ive never done it before but im more than willing to give it a go.
Im wondering what syncro rubbers etc cost?
Im comparing this to buying one from the wreckers for about $300

Synchros themselves are not really that expensive. It all starts to ad up though when you also need to replace some bearings, a couple of internal seals here and there. If the gearbox has some km's on it you may even need to replace a gear or have the dog teeth reground and this is where a couple of hundred turns into several hundred very easily.
Any gearbox without stripping is hard to tell exactly what it will cost but if you choose to use aftermarket parts your synchros will probably set you back $30 - $60 each bearings around the same money each. Just keep in mind that there is probably around 8 main bearings inside that gearbox + the needle roller bearings under the gears. You will also find each gear to replace even with a good second hand one from your local gearbox shop will cost you over $100 each I would think.
One other thing to consider is to strip the gearbox you will need more than just a few selected handtools, most toyota gearboxes require at least one decent 3 or 2 leg puller to removed gears and bearings or a good sandwich plate and a press. The secondary shaft and diff carrier also requires shims to set bearing preload so you will have to source the correct size if you want it to last when you put it back together.
If you are think you can manage it with the tools you have then go for it, I am not trying to turn you off it just ads up very quickly if you want to do it properly.
$300 is cheap for a second hand gearbox but the only problem is you don't know what you are going to get it could be someone elses piece of rubbish.
Can I suggest that if you intend on keeping the car and you think the rebuild is beyond your capability but are happy to remove the gearbox yourself drop in and see your local gearbox shop and get a price to have it done by them. I think you will find it will be around $500 - $800 depending on how far you want to go and that should then last you for longer than you will probably have the car for.
All the best with it, I hope this helps

hmmm....my guess is you'd still be up for over 1k for a rebuild as you still need to pay the labor for the strip, new parts, reshimming for clearances etc and reassembly.
