Default gen 1 3sge rebuild info

considering these motors are over 20 years old and still around running with 200-300 000km's on them...

if one was to freshen one up, are there any 'weak' points that need addressing??

aside from putting some decent rings/bearings (sevre duty or race series), maybe some good rod bolts??
i've read the GTE oil pumps are alot better than the NA ones?? is this the same for the water pumps??

i'm not after something that will break records of NA 2.0L 3sg's..just looking into using a Gen 1 3sge, with a bit of port shaping, maybe some mild cams, etc etc... just to give it a little more pep... probly not even going to rev it any harder than what it has been revving for the past 25 years..

    cheers,

When rebuilding a 3s motor you will find that they are quite expensive to rebuild as aftermarket parts aren't as common as some other motors. In saying that they are available if your willing to spend the money. Oil pumps in the 3sgte are suppose to be better but I personally have never put one in a NA engine, during rebuilds I have only ever fitted them to the turbo engine they came from. I have always just used the genuine 3sge oil pump in the 3sge engine and have never had a problem with one. Unless of course the car has very high km's and that's a different story.

Water pumps are the same quailty/strength from one to the other so just get the one that suits the series of engine you have.

As far as weak points use some decent quality bearings (big end and main) and if you intend to give your car a hard time an engine oil cooler or larger sump maybe something to look into as most 3s engines seem to have oiling issues. Lots of further information on this can be found if you want to hunt around the different forums.

Rod bolts unless you have the money to spend I probably wouldn't bother as the standard setup is already strong. If you have no intention of using a turbo motor a set of camshafts would be a great idea as some reasonable performance can be gained by changing to various different cams. Just remember that the bigger the cam the more of a pig they are to drive around town.

If you are running the motor in rwd format I would suggest the Beams version, although more expensive they have much better power output and are much easy to mount North/South than the fwd counterpart.

    I hope this helps

these are the cheapest CAM's goin round for the gen1 3s head (scroll to bottom of page)
    http://www.atsracing.net/cams.htm

for rebuilding, speaking to a competent 3sgte mechanic the standard aluglide ACL bearings are substantial for most engines(standard rpm)

you can use the gen2 10.1:1cr pistons and maybe throw in some eagle rods(only 300US) and 550g's for lightness etc.

i think the 5sfe oil pump fit's and flows more than the 3sgte and is a common upgrade, but then again the 3sgte's have oil squirters so need the extra flow.

also the 3s's have a massive sump/oil capacity compared to the sr20 and i think dont have any oil starvation issues(common) if the oil level's keep right.

considering they go for 300thou K's standard they dont really have any bad weak spots if they're treated well.

excellent, it will be going RWD setup..

i know the Beams would be an excellent engine to just literally drop in there.. no rebuilding etc and will probly have ALOT more power than my planned basic rebuild.. but the initial outlay is what kills me.. although they are becoming cheaper..
