I've been looking into possibilites for a 20-valve Carib. Apparently all E110-series Corollas are the same under the hood. Initially I thought of fitting a V6, then perhaps putting a Lysholm-type supercharger on the 4A-GE. Supercharging doesn't appear to be a viable option, as apparently the 20-valve engine isn't strong enough to take boost.
So I thought of putting a 3.3-liter Subaru EG33 and Legacy GT driveline into it; I have most of the parts, but to get a real feel as to whether this is an option I need a wreck no wheels to try to position the trans, rear diff etc to see if they can be made to fit.
The other option is to drop a V6 in, FWD or fit a rear diff and have 4WD. The problem is finding a suitable engine. 3VZs are usually stuffed; they have issues, though I believe that, like VW wasserboxers, proper maintenance of the coolant and cooling system can prevent problems. At least they're cheap, and would probably respond well to supercharging. 1VZs & 2VZs are too small to be worthwhile. Mitsubishis wear out fast, Mazda/Eunos V6s are gutless, Nissans apparently are not reliable and what does that leave? Late Camry engines are not affordable and none are available here anyway.
I guess I'm looking for someone who knows the engines, and someone (not necessarily the same person) who has done a V6 conversion on a FWD Corolla, either FWD or 4WD.
re superchargers, I am looking only at Lysholm-type (so-called "twinscrews"), not exhaust or belt-driven centrifugals or Eatons. And NOT the garbage ICI-Lysholms fitted to Eunos 800Ms... I have one of those, and it's scrap, as they all seem to be, with leaking seals.
