Angry Removing front shocks from struts - any tips?

    Hi,

Just cleaning up some struts that I got from the wreckers and I can't for the life of me get the shock out from the strut.

Is there any way to do this other beat the living **** out of it?. I have attached the strut top to it (not going to use it) and hit it with a mallet numerous times and it doesn't budge. Liberal coatings of WD40 don't seem to help so just wondering if anyone has any hints or tips to get them to separate.

Should they be this difficult to remove or should they just slide out and I'm doing something wrong (can't see what it would be though!).

    Thanks,

...and therein lies the problem......saying that I have now gone back out and tried removing the gland nut and she is stuck fast.

Any tips on getting it undone??.......all i have proceeded to do is butcher one side of it through putting a cold chisel into the side and trying to rotate it with a few taps of a mallet.

I took mine to a suspension place the other day and got him to undo it for me.
He had to put them in a vice, pipe wrench and a bit of pipe for leverage.

Clamp the gland nut in the vice.
Bolt a large long piece of tube, metal something to where the steering arm bolts too. Lever untill loose.

    Heat may be needed.

Takai has a pic ill look for it

........well i think the pipe wrench is the next in line........good to see all sorts of backyard methods are used to get them undone.....that 10 foot bar would probably work like a charm.

    Cheers Guys,

Rex just uses a large set of adjustable multi-grips.

He's only had one set that were siezed, a little carefully directed heat and BAM!!! out they come.

Or try soaking them in diesel.

....all sorted now.......the above pic was the inspiration.........bench vice and a long bar and she was off in a jiffy.

Agreed. Best to loosen it while still in the car.
