    Default clutch probs

Hey guys.. my clutch is shit (i think). on my st165 gt4. ill put the car into gear and slightly lift my foot off and it will move straight away.. is this clutch slip?? i looked at the front of the motor where you normally bleed the clutch and the little rubber thingo looks squashed and oily like its ruined.

if i keep my foot on the clutch will stay, but i am smelling a burning smell during longish driving..

it doesnt seem that im loosing any clutch fluid though.its also hard to get into all gears quickly.. the gearbox seems fine though..

oh yeh and the clutch is hard to push in

    thanks

sounds like the clutch is really tight and the hydraulic system can't cope with it but the fact that the slave cylinder is all oily indicates that it has a problem aswell unfortanately i think you will have to replace the clutch aswell as the the clutch master and slave cylinders..

honestly i think you need to pull the gearbox out and check the clutch i don;t think an adjustment is gonna fix it

clutch slip is when you'll be accelerating (3rd gear is best) and the engine starts revving out quicker than the car is moving - basically the engine free revs as the clutch slips

sounds to me like you need to adjust the free play on your clutch pedal, and that your slave cylinder might be leaking. both are easy jobs to resolve, pulling a gearbox out of an ST165 just to 'check' the clutch is not

keep an eye on the fluid in your clutch master cylinder, if the slave is leaking the fluid level will drop

the burning smell is probably an unrelated oil leak

    I agree with Dale.

A way to test for clutch slip is to select 4th gear at low speed, push the clutch in, dial up some revs like 4k and then dump the clutch.

If the clutch is slipping you should notice it with this test.

Also as said I'd look at the master / slave to see if they are leaking and also the adjustment way before removing the gearbox to inspect the clutch

My celica slips in all the gears =\ and i dont have any money to fix it. But your problem is deffinatly not clutch slip. The clutch pedal would be almost all the way out before you notice any forward movement if your clutch was worn and needed to be changed.

there are a whole lotta leaks, but havent had a chance to identify them. alot around the transfer case ect, but i think engine oil is the main prob

I would try replacing the slave cylinder first. They normally are not worth repairing because they rust internally and get holes where the rubber seals run so the new seals will also leak. You are supposed to bleed your old fluid out and replace it with new fluid every 12 months or so to stop this sort of thing happening because brake and clutch fluid absorbs moisture which causes the rust.

What problem, it's a pic of a slave cyl. with a very compressed dust boot, that's all. To me, it indicates that the clutch is well worn & pushing the slave's piston near the bottom of its travel. The slave will either work or leak some while it still works or leak so much it doesn't work.
You haven't written anything about any problem that would suggest its cause is from the slave.

    Adjust the pedal height.
Adjust the clutch MC free play.
