    Default Turbo glowing cherry red

ae86 4agte with gt28r .64 noticed the other day whilst cruising my rear housing glowing red., wasnt giving car a hard time etc.

Ive search on internet and seems to be pretty common but the thing is mines never did this before running 16psi on a track, yet on a cold night cruising 70kmhr its done this.

Engine is running EMS stinger tuned on a 40degree day with alot of advanced timing abot 4 months ago and has never show signs of ping/knock. Yet recently been hearing weird noises in engine bay with 16psi of load and 5k onwards, but its hard to determine due to exhaust etc.

What are somethings i should be looking at before dyno on 26th.

    Possible it is running lean.

What size turbo is it and what size is the rear housing?

As pandaah has asked, what are the AFR's running at? Have you got a wide band O2 sensor installed?

Probably running leaner due to much cooler ambient temps.

Lean mixture = higher cylinder and exhaust temps = glowing turbo

But is it possible that it could also be due to a restrictive rear housing?

I know of a 4agte in a mr2 that has quite a small turbo on it, and it will glow even on a stock tune with stock boost levels

I ran a CT9 on a 4AGE before, I'd say that a 'restrictive' housing won't directly cause that to happen.

If it was tuned properly, this wouldnt be the case due to the air/coolant temp correction maps.

Anyway... i run my 3SGTE quite lean while cruising at ~17:1.
I never see hot exhaust temps.

coolant/air temp calibration is rarely done in a simple power/cruise tune like your 2 hours at the dyno. It take a while to tweak it right, waiting for actual cold/hot days and road tuning. 40 degree day downto 10 deg day and there is your problem.

I think you may be right there , turbo was glowing on extremely cold night thru twisties, whilst day driving in my area its ok..The A/F were spot on form last tune to last toymods dyno day.. It runs 14.5 to 1 on idle and riches up in rev range and stays between 12.1-13.1up to redline.

My tuner has added alot of compensation for hot days retard timing/more fuel etc, i am not to sure about cold days. I am running a very good CAI on my car and my inlet temps are very low most of the time.

Reason for mentioning the 40degree day was to show that hes tuned it in tuffest conditions without ping/knock.

Have check spark plugs and there looking normal. One more thing i should mention is it has de accleration fuel cut setup so injector voltage drops off pedal.

deaccel fuel cut wont do it, it should cut injection time all together (mine does anyway), pretty much every factory efi car since the mid 80s runs it.

your tuner should have done the air temp correction maps to maintain a constant AFR, the only reason its required is when its cold the air is denser and requires more fuel.

have you checked your timing recently?
