how do you fit up an oil catch can?

hey guys, bought a kit a while back,

just dont know how to fit it up????????,

i read an article a while back on here (cant find it using search) saying that you need to make it breathe really well?

blake easy way to tell if u really need it on the 1g-gte is to remove the big fat black accordion type hose( the one ur afm is conncted to) that runs into the turbo inlets
just under where the hose joins the turbo inlet is a smaller black hose which runs back into the crancase (look behind where u fill the oil in the 1g) thats the hose that circulates the oily air back into the air intake (in this case ur turbo inlets) if there is oil where the turbo inlet meets the black accordion hose then u need a catch can
the catch can simply just tees into that small black hose

TURBO INLET----------------- OIL CATCH CAN -------------------------------- [IG-GTE OIL FILLER ]

---------------- is the small black hose

hope that expalnation helps (its the same for all cars)

ALSO PEOPLE EVERYONE FORGOT ANOTHER MAJOR ADVANTAGE OF HAVING A CATCH CAN


in the case there is oil coming out of the breather ( small back pipe on the 1g that attaches to the turbo inlets) the oil will then be sent back into the intake via the turbos and guess what STRAIGHT INTO UR INTERCOOLER
now we all know what happens next
for the lesser technically minded people
the oil going into the cooler forms a oily coating on the inside of ur cooler fins
and then guess what happens
the cooling effieciency of ur intercooler will be reduced due to the fact that the heat cannot be excahnged properly cause of the oil film on the inside of the cooling fins
so in other words intercooled air will still not be as efficient as it should be thereby reducing power output BY A LITTLE BIT
MOST NOTICABLE IN RACING , WHICH IS ANOTHER REASON WHY MOST/ALL RACE CARS HAVE A OIL CATCH CAN

Well here's a picture of how to hook one up.

I don't care if it's wanky to most people but according to Matt from Toyospares it's a must when you're continuously putting a lot of lateral G on one side of the engine which forces a lot of oil to jump to one side.

To rig one up, Find or make a hole to match the nut that the kit comes with... usually 8mm or 10mm which is perfect for toyotas.

If it doesn't come with an adapter just vice and bend a piece of metal to suit and drill.

Goes from PCV valve -> tank -> then tank -> intake plenum.



Stuff the breathers, from experience you have to change them about once every 2 months.

Also, those worried about the "oily residue"... u can see from my set up it's barely gone past the can itself which assures me that maybe only tiny amounts of oil is being burnt back out.

This is a lot better as the original OEM just burnts EVERYTHING out.

are you allowed to have level viewing pipe for serious racing? if it ever breaks for whatever reason, then out comes all the oil

also and im surprised it hasnt been mention yet , the oily residue past backed to the intake will mix with fuel once it hits the cylinder and can lower octane ratings resulting in detonation.

note: you'd need a decent volume of oil passing back to the intake for this to actualy affect power. but any kilowatt is a good kilowatt!

If you are going to route it back to your intake. Make sure you get an internally baffled catchtank. Otherwise you won't actually be separating much oil from the air.

Note: Many of the name brand ones are NOT internally baffled.

I can vouch for this - a Greddy one that I saw opened up had no baffles. and they wanted $150 for it - what a joke.

I've had blown head gaskets and leaky sumps that present more of an oil problem that a tiny little can with about 30mls of rotten oil.

Not to mention the eager days when we all had tried to fill oil without a funnel.

All in all i find it very trivial to know it took over a year to collect the amount i have without having to remove it and empty it. It this because you personally dislike the sideviewers and you think it's wanky?

i'm not sure exactly what you are trying to say...

however, i had thought i had heard that the viewing pipes were not allowed in certain forms of racing because of the possibility of failure.

anyway
there is a big difference between an oil catch can, and an oil air separator, some cars need them because of the head design, some don't need as much. K series engines definitely do for right hand turns.

side viewing pipe is not necessary imho how hard is it unscrew the top and have a look in? (oh thats right, the "professional" ones are all welded up so you can't see inside them baffles? what baffles..)

Check out this catch can bling its not plumb back, doesnt have a little fancy pants filter nor is it pretty, but it does the job for me

That first link has a pretty good idea... Air compressor filter... if they could handle the temps they would be quite a functional air / oil seperator!
They come with 1/4" NPT(F) fittings too!

Gearbox, your idea allows too much moisture back into the rocket cover. Also when sealing the catch can it causes pressure build-up which would ruin the brake fliud bottle your using?

If you get a catch can make sure it can stand up to the pressure. I had one which i built and it actually got crushed when i floored the car. The other important thing is that you want to minimise the chance of any moisture going back to your rocket cover/engine. So a sealed approached is needed. But it also needs to have an outlet for the pressure, which is why they plumb it back to the intake pipe or use a filter on it..

I fixed this problem by using a clear fuel filter that cost $2, it did all the job, except it was hard to clean out, and then i got defected by a stupid cop who put down 'oil to injector motor' in the stupid report. (Mate they sure aren't bright) And it cost me a new pick slip to get it undefected. Get a proper one and keep it hidden, what they don't see they don't bother with.

Also a thing to note is that the lines you usually get with the catch cans are generally useless as they squash up due to heat and pressure, and then the engine looses it breathing ability. Use some proper oil lines they work better.

ANother point baffled is good but having one not baffled is better than not having one at all.

ALSO someone told me that larger catch can can help produce more power on cars, apparently used in some racing applications. Not sure about the truth or not????
