if you were to swap all of your sensors from the afm motor, it might work. but the map ecu and the afm ecu are different, you can't use the map sensor with an afm ecu and vice versa.

umm, im not sure which sensors are the same and which are different. could cross check the part numbers on some of them, otherwise just to be safe, could swap the lot

i take it they both are CAS and dli. you might have dramas if one has a distributor and the other is CAS.

Whats wrong with the AFM engine?

shouldn't matter, if the the old afm engine was a dizzy, when he puts the new map engine in so long as he uses the dizzy of the afm he should be ok, but you won't get that big power gain that usually goes from the afm engine to the map engine, you may make a couple of kw through the higher compression, but it won't be like if you used the later ecu and all the correct sensors

both motors are dli/cas so no drama's there. we put the new map one in tonight but it wont start.

its definately got fuel and spark and its cranking, we're thinking that we might not have wired something properly. theres a few floaters around the place if you know what i mean.

the previous motor started blowing smoke slightly - i think the rings have had it so i'm going to rebuild it when i get back from europe.

i really dont like people doing this... to me it's just like putting a 4A-FE ecu and sensors on your 4A-GE..... it's not designed for that engine!!

there are major electrical and mechanical differences between the smallport and bigport gze's... here's just some of the sensors that i can think of that are different:
    - intake air temp
    - water temp
    - engine load signals (air flow meter vs a MAP sensor)
    - TPS
    - smallport has a knock sensor, bigport doesnt
    ... im sure there's more.

You can make the bigport electrics work on the smallport engine... but you MUST put ALL the electrical sensors and devices from the bigport onto the smallport....

i rekon you've just dodged up your wiring.
    ...... butt scratcher?!

yeah i'd say its the wiring, the only sensor swapped over was the afm itself.

i had a suspicion that things wouldnt just work out, despite what others assured me.

anywho, its been done and now i have to deal with it and make things work. basically you reckon we need to replace all the smallport sensors that you've listed and then it'll be alright?

all as in every sensor that the runs to the ecu
