1989 Toyota Corolla Help

Hi all,

Im new to this forum, and I would like to show a couple of pics of my 1989 Toyota Corolla I will be picking up on the 12th of June.

It has a 4AGE engine in it and what not.

What will I need for it to go hard? (Turbo? Computer? Exhaust) any suggestions??

Looks pretty good!
I don't think your's would be a 1989 model.. they stopped making that shape in 87..
The 4AGE's are pretty awesome engines in stock form.. DON'T put a pod filter on it, instead get a nice k&n or something similar PANEL filter to fit in the stock air box.
A larger diameter exhaust would be a good idea. I'm not sure how well the stock manifold flows, but extractors always sound nice anyway.

The AE82 model was from 1985 to 1989

Stock manifold is pretty good, most people I know who changed to extractors had little gain or even lost power in some circumstances. And don't go larger than 2 1/4" on the exhaust, it is only a 1.6L and unless you get a good muffler/resonator combination it sounds farty and raspy (at the same time, and not in a good way)

To the OP:
What are you defining as "hard"? Is 86kw in a 950kg car not enough?

It's a Series 2/3, so that'll make it post-86 (you can tell by the wheels and the grille/indicators, as well as the centre garnish and spoiler at the rear)

General concensus is that the '89 models (Series 3) should have the 7-rib bigport block, which yours appears _not_ to have (you've got the 3-rib), but then again conversions/engine swaps are common for a car that age. Build plate will tell all, however.

Seriously? I had no idea. How come there are '88 model ae90's? Did they make them at the same time?

There aren't....well, at least not Australian-made ones. The changeover from E8 to E9 for Australian-made models was June '89 (the Japanese-made AE95 4WD wagon was on sale in '88, however). Either what you've seen is a mis-print, or an import (Japan always got the new models a year or two before us).
